Responsible for preparation of story time and presentation of story times.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks primarily under the supervision of the Branch Manager and in consultation with the Head of Youth Services regarding children's programming at the Branch.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDSupervises the Branch Clerks in the absence of the Branch Manager.EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (These tasks are illustrative only; to carry out the day-to-day functions of the job, other duties may be performed. - Plans, prepares and conducts a regular schedule of story time programs as assigned (including travel to the Branches or the Main Library for presentation or preparation of story times as needed). Recommends to the Children's Librarians, the purchase of materials including books for programming.
- Prepares work schedules for all Branch employees in the absence of the Branch Manager. Prepares cleaning schedules; dusts shelves and furniture.
- At the direction of the Branch Manager, communicates with other departments within the Library system to coordinate Maintenance, Information Technology requests and Circulation requests as needed to initiate programs or resolve problems.
- Receives, checks in and catalogues Branch periodicals.
- Performs circulation functions including:
- Assists the public in applying for library membership, processes registration forms and issues library cards. Prepares library cards for mailing, as needed.
- Charging, discharging, routing, changing status, and placing requests against materials at the circulation desk, as well as checking returned items for damage or missing pieces.
- Accurately collecting and recording fines, fees, and gifts; maintaining a balanced cash drawer.
- Pulling requested online materials for patrons either in person or using prepared listed and routing them properly.
- Assists patrons by:
- Answering directional and procedural inquiries.
- Advising patrons concerning the library and its services, resources and policies.
- Giving instruction in the use of the on-line catalog and location of materials.
- Instructing in the operation of equipment.
- Answering reference and other information requests.
- Answering incoming calls; providing guidance and assistance, routing calls to appropriate personnel or department; taking messages.
- Supervises reshelving and prepares items for reshelving and reshelves as necessary.
- Retrieves and sorts books from book drops as necessary.
- Attends and participates in monthly Branch Manager meetings in the absence of the Branch Manager.
- Responsible for enforcement of Library policy and procedures within the Branch in the absence of the Branch Manager.
- Plans and creates displays as requested.
- Helps with collection development by doing minor repairs to books, magazines and videos; prepares and counts materials for discard, marking items appropriately.
- Sorts donations for Library use or book sale. Prepares donations for pickup by Library staff.
- Maintains confidential patron records and preserves confidentiality of said records.
- Maintains office equipment including providing paper for copiers and printers as needed.
- Able to assist in changes of daily work schedule due to unexpected public demands.
- May be required to work nights and weekends.
- May fill in other positions within the department.
- Performs other related duties as required.
RequirementsEducation and Experience: (A) An associate's degree OR equivalent experience; and(B) Children's programming experience preferred; and(C) Supervisory experience preferred.Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (A) Excellent computer skills, including keyboarding and internet experience; ability to perform detailed and precise work.(B) Excellent leadership and training skills; ability to effectively supervise staff; ability to mentor staff to improve performance.(C) Ability to create innovative approaches to problem solving; ability to evaluate performance and design solutions to perceived needs.(D) Ability to adhere to library policies and procedures; ability to set priorities and manage workloads.(E) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and all library employees; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work in a team environment as well as independent work.(F) Ability to adjust to changes in the daily work schedule; ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.(G) Ability to learn Dewey Decimal system, automated circulation system and library circulation policies and procedures; ability to count change and handle money.(H) Must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDDesktop computer, including word processing, cash register, copier, printer and general office tools.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
