Job Description :

Non-sworn employee assigned to the Patrol Response Unit within the Patrol Division to assist Law Enforcement. To perform a wide variety of technical and administrative tasks to support of the Police Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general direction from the Patrol Response Unit Lieutenant.

Exercises no supervisory authority.

* Initiate investigations and complete follow up investigations on a small category of minor cases: (e.g. Abandoned Vehicles, Parking Complaints, Thefts, Lost and Abandoned Property Calls, etc.).

* Obtain sworn statements from victims and witnesses ONLY and document additional information on reports.

* Assist with traffic direction at accident scenes, traffic flow problems, funeral escorts, parades, and other special events; assist Tyler Fired Department and investigative personnel with on-scene investigations as directed.

* Be able to work independently and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

* Issue parking citations for city ordinance and handicap violations.

* Perform related duties and answer any call deemed necessary by a supervisor.

* Participate in use of force training to maintain proficiency in the use of department issued non-lethal weapons (i.e. OC Spray).

* Assist with taking lobby calls at both the Downtown and Faulkner Park Police Stations as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITES:

* Administrative directives of the City of Tyler Police Department upon completion of the training program.

* Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations upon completion of the training program.

* Must have general knowledge of various office machines (i.e. printer, copier, facsimile, 10-key calculator).

* Must possess basic knowledge of mathematical skills involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

* Must have knowledge and skill to operate a personal computer and use current versions of Microsoft applications in the Office Suite such as Access, Excel, and Word.

* Must possess certification to access to the Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) through the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System.

* Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with the public, employees, and management in person, by e-mail, or by telephone.

Environmental Conditions:

Involves work in the field under a variety of unfavorable environmental conditions including those involving harsh weather and extreme temperatures; occasional work in a climate controlled office environment.

Physical Factors:

Performs a variety of physically demanding activities which may include, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting, carrying, dragging, pulling, and reaching. Must be able to sit or stand for 2 to 4 hours at a time. Must be able to lift or carry weights from 1 to 20 pounds. Must be able to stoop and bend 1 to 5 times daily.

Education and Experience: Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver's License with a clear driving record.

* SELECTION PROCESS STEPS*

* Medical Test / Drug & Alcohol - Medical examination performed by a licensed physician. The physician must also be able to certify that the applicant is free of drug dependency or illegal drug usage.

* Psychological Examination - Applicants will be required to take and pass a Psychological Examination consisting of both a written examination and clinical interview with a licensed psychologist.

* Background Investigation - Applicant will be required to complete a Personal History Statement and appropriate releases and paperwork to initiate a background investigation.

* Polygraph Examination - A polygraph examination will be administered as a part of the background investigation. The test will include investigation of the applicant's work history; driving history; military history and involvement in criminal activities such as employment thefts and drug usage.

Background and Polygraph will take approximately 4 weeks to complete.

The selection process should take approximately 6 weeks.

An applicant who fails to successfully complete any of the required tests or is determined to be unemployable during the background investigation may be restricted from reapplying for the position for a period of time at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in glace or each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Norge, and eight years of relevant experience will he considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree, Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.

The City of Tyler Policy states Persons under eighteen (18) years of age may be employed in temporary or regular part-time positions, if they furnish the City with a minor's release (Form 2-2) and are approved by the City Manager.

No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any position requiring the operation of a City motorized vehicle.
