Water Treatment Operator Job Summary

The Water Treatment Plant Operator operates and maintains the water treatment plant equipment to proper specifications, performs all routine water chemistry sampling and analysis, including adjustments and minor maintenance/calibration of the equipment. Incumbents work rotating shifts covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays and overtime as required. This is a safety sensitive position.

Water Treatment Operator Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment serving a power generating cycle.
  • Operate the plant water treatment equipment including, but not limited to, filters, clarifiers, filter press, reverse osmosis, demineralizers, heat exchangers, and chemical feed systems.
  • Perform routine water chemistry analysis and routine lab maintenance.
  • Assure that the daily lab logs and other pertinent water treatment, chemical, and environmental records are complete and accurate.
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during the shutdown or repair of any water treatment system.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant chemistry manual and all technical references, prints, diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records associated with water treatment equipment.
  • Monitor plant water chemistry program and environmental effluents and provide recommendations on necessary adjustments.
  • Effectively communicates information to supervision and other plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.
  • While working rotating shifts, 12 hours per day, all meal periods and breaks shall be considered as paid, on-duty time. The employee will coordinate work activities with coworkers and the unit supervisor, as appropriate, to facilitate the applicable meal and break periods.

Water Treatment Operator Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advises unit supervisor of daily activities and irregularities in plant operations.
  • Performs routine housekeeping and cleaning in work areas.
  • Reviews operating logs, records and plant performance as required.
  • Assists other plant operators and maintenance personnel as required.
  • Understands and operates facility to maintain all compliance requirements. Notifies Supervisor/Manager if non-compliance in environmental and safety occurs.
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to handle chemical system including, but not limited to, filling and draining chemical tanks and transferring chemicals.
  • Assist with training of other plant personnel, as assigned.
  • Complete assigned training requirements both online and in-person.
  • Safety sensitive position is a job or position where the employee holding this position has the responsibility for his/her own safety or other people's safety.
  • Ability to work overtime when requested and as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:

Water Treatment Operator Prerequisites

High school diploma or equivalent. Two years' experience in water treatment plant and/or power plant operations, and Water Treatment Operator certificates T2, D1 issued by State of California Water Resources Control Board, is desired. Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, and water treatment facility operations and chemical handling is required. Must possess a valid driver license.

Water Treatment Operator Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out detailed instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to use logical and divergent reasoning to solve problems.
  • Ability to work safety and effectively with others.
  • Ability to maintain clean work area and neat, accurate logs and journals.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read, interpret and retrieve information from technical manuals.
  • Ability to learn and execute emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to operate, monitor, and analyze problems with assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Knowledge in piping system with chemical and hazards fluids, familiarity with water chemistry instruments such as VOC analyzers, oxygen detectors, etc.
  • Knowledge of environmental standards as applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is required.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls required.
  • Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Office 365, and SAP.
  • Advancement through the Tech Levels are determined by completing the requirements for the next Tech Level in accordance with company policy and the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement).

Water Treatment Operator Essential Functions of the Job

The ability to speak, read and write in English. Ability to perform heavy physical work, occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force with assistance, 50 pounds of force on a frequent basis, and up to 20 pounds constantly, performing such activities as grasping, lifting, reaching, crouching, standing, walking, running, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, sitting, and repetitive tasks. Ability to use emergency equipment in emergency situations, such as respirators and S.C.B.A. (self-contained breathing apparatus). The ability to discern assorted colors.

Water Treatment Operator Working Conditions

Works in normal power plant environment. Potential exposure to hot, cold, sudden change of temperature, dry, wet, dusty, quiet, noisy, moving objects, exposure to sun and rain, high places, and working alone or with others. Potential hazards include minor cuts, minor burns, electrical shock, falling objects, falls, eyesight and hearing impairment. Wearing of personal protective equipment is necessary, as is the ability to legally operate Company vehicles. Works 12-hour shifts, day or night, with on-duty meals and break periods.

Compensation details: 26.04-37.57 Hourly Wage
