The Shared Research Facility at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a Scanning Electron Microscopy Specialist.

About the Opportunity

This position reports to the WVU Director of Shared Facilities and oversees the FIB-SEM and accessories and related sample preparation equipment. WVU Shared Research Facilities is a central facility comprised of four cores (Electron Microscopy, Materials Characterization, Bio-Nano Research Facility and the NanoFabrication Facility) that provide researchers from WVU, other academic institutions, government labs or the private sector access to and training for state-of-the-art research tools. Each core is overseen by technical staff with specialized training, who are dedicated to researchers' success. The staff work closely with WVU research leaders and their students and provide training, guidance, and assistance in operating the instruments. They also ensure that instruments are in sound working order and develop strategies for the continued improvement of the facility.

The FIB-SEM Specialist will be one of two electron microscopists. This position will be responsible for operating and maintaining the FIB-SEM, providing technical support to researchers, and contributing to the development and optimization of imaging techniques. This role requires a strong understanding of FIB-SEM instrumentation, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic academic environment. Additional duties include assistance with TEM when other staff are unavailable.

What You'll Do

Instrumentation Oversight:

* Oversee the daily use of the FIB-SEM and accessories and related sample preparation tools, including routine maintenance.

* Establish schedule for and oversee execution of more involved maintenance and periodic upgrades of instruments and laboratory environment.

* Coordinate with vendors Coordinate with vendors for major repairs and upgrades as needed.

* Anticipate laboratory needs and schedules to ensure that instruments operate properly prior to use, identify problems or malfunctions with apparatus and coordinate and work with external service providers partners for repair of instruments.

* Keep the laboratory space organized to maximize storage and enhance safety.

* Interface with WVU Facilities representatives for critical supporting infrastructure such as electrical, cooling, and physical security systems.

Advanced Research Assistance:

* Provide technical oversight and direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

* Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.

* Develop experimental protocols where modification or adaptation of standard procedures is required.

* Work closely with researchers to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality results.

Instrumentation Use and Training:

* Develop operating protocols and training materials for instrument use by students and researchers and make those resources available online.

* Train and oversee students and other instrument users to develop laboratory techniques and skills.

* Establish and maintain scheduling software and tools for instruments and related tools.

* Maintain usage records and manage billing for users.

* Maintain accurate records of FIB-SEM operations, maintenance activities, and research outcomes.

* Prepare and present technical reports, research findings, and progress updates to departmental meetings and stakeholders.

* Ensure all work is conducted in accordance with university safety protocols and regulatory requirements.

* Promote a safe and organized work environment, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

In General:

* Communicate effectively in spoken and written exchange with fellow staff, researchers, external users and supplies.

* Should demonstrate ability to gather data, compile product or equipment specifications and make recommendations.

* Work to grow the user base both internal and external, with excellent customer service, rapid responses to inquiries and willingness to be flexible.

* Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in experimental sciences such as physics, engineering, materials science or a related discipline.

* Experience in overseeing instrumentation laboratories.
