The City of Roanoke is seeking a Family Intervention Advocate to reduce gun and gang violence in the City of Roanoke by understanding the culture and dynamics of affected communities and taking targeted actions to achieve this goal. Their responsibilities include conducting community outreach, mediating low-level conflicts, referring high-level conflicts, and connecting high-need residents with support services. The Family Intervention Advocate can expect to perform the below duties and others as assigned. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with residents in areas significantly impacted by gun violence. Develops relationships with identified individuals to provide guidance and expand access to quality opportunities and community resources. Conducts weekly life-skills classes to learn about and support class participants in addressing and managing the issues they face. Collaborates with community leaders and City officials to identify areas for improvement, and develops plans to increase support services for the populations most effected by gun violence. Works in schools to provide outreach and support to broaden student interests, life skills through various activities. Facilitates meetings with the Street Outreach team to review cases and incidents of violence, and develop strategies for conflict intervention. Assists in the planning and delivery of services to the population served. Coordinates with Life Skills class facilitators to review class topics for relevancy and relatability to the population served. Collaborates with the Prevention and Intervention Team to review challenges, achievements, and develop program goals. Maintains regular communication with Prevention and intervention outreach workers, contractors, volunteers to monitor and assess program participants achievements and/or challenges, and provides additional support as needed. Participates with department leadership to review, evaluate, and plan grant funding to maximize impact to Prevention and Intervention Team Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others. A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college is desirable but not required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the criminal justice or human services field. Possession of a valid Virginia Drivers License and satisfactory driving record is an ongoing requirement. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Possession of a valid Virginia Drivers License and satisfactory driving record is an ongoing requirement.
