The City of Renton's Water Distribution Section is recruiting to fill a Water Maintenance Services Worker 2/3 vacancy. The Maintenance Services Worker performs technical, and physically labor-intensive tasks in support of the Public Works Maintenance division. Work is performed independently and as part of a team. Tasks are completed with general guidelines and require some independent judgment. Contribute to the City's vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. This classification is part of a series and incumbents may also perform duties at the entry and/or intermediate level.

Annual Salary:

Maintenance Services Worker 2: $64,656 - $78,804

Maintenance Services Worker 3: $71,376 - $86,988

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintenance Services Worker 2:

* Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, weeding, planting, and pruning as well as applying specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests.

* Remove litter and debris from roadways and facilities and assist in the cleanup of job sites, within right-of-ways, easements, and other areas as required.

* Assist in the excavation and rechanneling of ditches.

* Load and unload materials from trucks.

* Assist to maintain inventory of tools, equipment and supplies on vehicles.

* Dig and backfill excavations manually and using light equipment.

* Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, specialized equipment and hand and power tools.

* Assist to maintain vehicle, tools and equipment in a clean, safe and proper working condition.

* Input data for a variety of records including work orders, time records and materials use records.

* Respond to customer questions and maintain good public relations.

* Perform traffic control duties in high traffic conditions for co-workers, other City departments and contractors as assigned.

* Utilize Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.

* Drive commercial vehicles as assigned.

* Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

* Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.

* Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.

Maintenance Services Worker 3:

* Perform a variety of specialized duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, water distribution, surface water, and wastewater facilities and systems.

* Excavate and rechannel ditches.

* Load and unload materials from trucks.

* Read maps, blueprints, and schematics to locate all city owned infrastructure.

* Dig and backfill excavations manually and using light and heavy equipment.

* Assist in the cleanup of job sites.

* Direct cleanup crews as assigned.

* Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, specialized equipment and hand and power tools, gas detector, and forklift.

* Perform general grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, weeding, planting, and pruning; apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects, and other pests.

* Remove litter and debris from roadways and facilities.

* Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies on maintenance vehicles; maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe and proper working condition.

* Input data for a variety of records including system operations, inspections, preventive maintenance and materials use records; work orders, time records, and field records

* Inspect facilities and systems for maintenance and repair needs; update and revise maps and diagrams of streets, pipe and manhole locations.

* Respond to and assist with the construction and maintenance of various department needs as it relates to streets, pipeline construction, flood control, snowstorms, waste removal, manhole repair and catch basin maintenance, and flag traffic as required.

* Operate computers, GPS survey equipment, laser levels, and software programs associated in the recording and mapping of City facilities, components, and systems.

* Assist with trench excavation to proper survey grade and line, laying of pipe, rechanneling of ditches and other aspects of surface water and wastewater system activities as assigned.

* Estimate of materials needed for projects.

* Utilize Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.

* Respond to customer complaints and inquiries.

* Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

* Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.

Water Distribution Section

* Assist in excavation of trenches to proper grade and line, placing bedding and laying pipe and components; backfill trenches and test piping; assist in cutting, threading and coating pipe; assist in leak detection and repair.

* Assist in the removal of pipe and install new potable water lines, mains, services and hydrants.

* Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing pumps and valves.

* Assist to maintain reservoirs and pump stations; clean and paint pipes, fittings, hydrants and other water system components.

* Install and replace water meters; ensure water meters are operating properly.

* Shut off accounts for non-payment; set up new accounts and sequence numbers; post public hearing notices for the City Clerk's Office; collect on over-due accounts.

* Maintain the area around meters and assure meter boxes are clean of dirt, debris and water.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Maintenance Services Worker 2:

* One year construction maintenance experience.

* Valid driver's license.

* The following certificates are required within six (6) months of employment:

* Flagging certificate

* First aid and CPR certificates

* Fork lift card.

Successful passing of a required background check.Successful passing of a required driving record check.Positions that require a CDL are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing. Water Distribution Specific

The following certificates are required within one year of employment:

* Obtain a State of Washington OIT (Operator in Training) certificate in water distribution.

Maintenance Services Worker 3:

* Two years of experience within the specific assigned maintenance services area.

* Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Recruitment Process:

Deferred Compensation Program

* The City contributes 3% of the employee's base wage rate into a deferred compensation retirement plan.

Retirement Plan

* Employees are enrolled in either the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems Plan (PERS) or the Public Safety Employees' Retirement System (PSERS).

Long Term Disability Protection

* Many employees are provided with a long term disability policy up to the equivalent of 60% of their salary.

Flexible Benefits

* The City offers employees the opportunity to open two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance and the other account is for child care costs.

Vacation

* Employees accrue vacation beginning with the first day of employment as follows: 12 days per year (0-5 years); 18 days per year (6-10 years); 21 days per year (11-15 years); 24 days per year (16-20 years); and 27 days per year (21+ years).

* Employees may access their vacation after six months of employment.

Sick Leave

* Upon employment, the employee receives a sick leave bank of 24 hours, with an additional 24 hours awarded after three months.

* Thereafter, sick leave accrues at the rate of four hours each pay period.

Paydays

* The City of Renton pays employees on the tenth and the twenty-fifth of each month (24 pay periods each year).
