LANDFILL ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR

SUMMARY
Under general supervision from the Solid Waste Supervisor this position maintains nightly duties ensuring that trash is being disposed of properly, equipment is being operating and maintained in a proper manner, customers are able to safely dispose of refuse and debris, all refuse is being covered at the end of every shift in accordance with city and state regulations. Duties include compiling, handling customer complaints, follow-up inspections and questions, assisting in the enforcement of the City's solid waste regulations, and overseeing the proper covering and maintaining of the landfill.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Performs general supervisory tasks of assigned personnel. including schedules, assignments, and solid waste disposal activities.
* Assists the Solid Waste supervisor with any daily task, such as scheduling time off, coordinating daily task for both shift, paperwork, equipment maintenance, and planning for inclement weather and running equipment.
* Assists the Solid Waste supervisor with daily, weekly and monthly reports as given by the city and TCEQ.
* Continuously checks on the operations of crews.
* Compiles daily reports, takes attendance, reports absences, and completes forms used in the site operating plan
* Maintains equipment sheets for pre-post trips, equipment hours and daily inspection sheets.
* Maintains good contact with the Solid Waste disposal supervisor and department heads and provides feedback on operations.
* Oversees the operation of crews.
* Checks on the cleanliness of assigned equipment, shop, and all other working areas.
* Observes equipment and vehicles for proper operation, cleanliness, service maintenance, and repair needs.
* Investigates complaints received from the public and departmental employees.
* Instructs crews on complaints received, follows up as needed, and observes disposal practices of customers, noting any violations.
* Encourages compliance with solid waste regulations and files formal complaints if necessary.
* Investigates and documents accidents and property damage.
* Assists the Solid Waste Supervisor with conducting and documenting safety instruction meetings with personnel.
* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of two years of personnel supervision and/or computer operation/data entry, bookkeeping, or accounting experience. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a waste screening class and applicable Solid Waste License within the guidelines of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
* Must have a good working knowledge of light, medium, and medium-large solid waste collection equipment, and trucks.
* Must possess computer skills necessary to compose reports and correspondence.
* Knowledge of basic telephone etiquette.
* Ability to schedule, assign, and oversee equipment operators.
* Must be able to integrate with other levels of personnel.
* Must have the ability to effectively communicate with coworkers.
* Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, etc.
* Ability to learn new software and improve processes with existing software.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to operate computers and other basic office equipment.
