Position Type: Service PersonnelDate Posted: 12/9/2024Location: MaintenanceClosing Date: 12/13/2024County: Kanawha County Public SchoolsPOSITION: Locksmith IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Supervisor of Maintenance FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 261 days annually SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Scale, Pay Grade G2 commensurate with experience and education level. EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel. JOB SUMMARY: Repairs, maintains and changes the various types of locks, safe combinations, and keys found in the Kanawha County School system. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Maintains in good working condition all locks (approximately 24,000) within the school system.
  • Cuts keys of all types.
  • Repairs broken locks and master key cylinders.
  • Respond to emergency situations, wherein a broken lock prevents proper security within a building or school facility.
  • Prepares and change combinations on safes when conditions exist.
  • Opens safes in case of lock-outs.
  • Maintains tools of the locksmith craft.
  • Repairs panic hardware as schedule allows and emergency warrants.
  • Maintains time and materials records of jobs.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
  • Complies with KCS Policies.
  • Complete necessary training and in-service as required by KCS.
  • Receives permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • Attends in-services and workshops as directed.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Continuously improves processes.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition of Qualifications in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required. 18 months experience from an approved apprenticeship or related training program. Individual should also have three to five years' work experience in the locksmith trade. Master locksmith license preferred. Should be bonded by West Virginia in locksmith trade. Individual must be able to drive a truck, must also be able to operate a key machine, grinder, drill, and drill press, etc. Individual must also maintain this equipment. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Ability to master keying.
  • Ability to read and interpret key codes, work from plans, drawings, and blueprints appropriate to trade.
