The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the

Maintenance Worker II (Parks & Beaches Division)

The Department:

The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City's physical infrastructure and maintenance for the City's beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer, storm drain systems, and rights of way while protecting the public's health and safety. The department also provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City's buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems in addition to management of a wide range of services and programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

* Perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair duties on City parks, beaches, golf courses, streets and facilities.

* Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, and hand and small power tools including loaders, backhoes, bobcats, hydraulic lifts, root pruners, jack hammers, tractors, dump trucks, riding mowers, small tractors, rototillers, stump cutters, sprayers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chippers, shredders, push mowers, weedeaters, shovels, rakes and pick axes; ensure all equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner.

* Maintain records of time spent performing various maintenance functions; provide assistance in preparing records and files.

* Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

* Perform a variety of maintenance and repair activities for City parks and landscaped areas including, grounds maintenance, aeration and overseeding; mowing and edging grass, operating leaf blowing equipment, pruning, removing and trimming shrubbery, and raking leaves and debris.

* Perform routine groundskeeping functions; pick up trash and debris; clean public restrooms including floors, windows and fixtures; empty refuse containers.

* Plant, water, cultivate, fertilize and care for shrubbery, lawns and trees; prepare soil for planting and transplanting; aerate soil and apply appropriate fertilizers.

* As assigned, perform chemical application duties; apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides; ensure proper application of all materials; perform all duties in compliance with City and mandated health and safety rules and regulations.

* Assist in irrigation functions; adjust sprinkler heads; repair pipes; refer to higher level maintenance staff as required.

* Plant, prune and maintain trees; remove stumps and cut back roots; clean limbs and brush from signs, lights and overhead lines; rig, lower and stack branches and limbs.

* Perform maintenance and repairs on various City facilities including buildings and grounds, playground, fitness, athletic and other recreational equipment, picnic tables, gates, fences, and shade structures.

* Perform maintenance and improvement projects at the beach; assess tidal action, operate beach loader to rake and remove kelp; open storm drains; build and maintain sand berms and dunes; maintain exits and walkways.

* Operate backhoe to remove debris and growth at storm drain outlets; operate beach sanitizer to remove nails, glass, kelp and other debris from the beach; operate dump trucks to remove or haul away debris and materials.

* Maintain various beach and swimming pool facilities, restrooms, walkways, stairs and ramps; clean and restock restroom supplies; remove graffiti from beach facilities and lifeguard towers, benches and rocks; paint restrooms and lifeguard towers as needed.

* Maintain beach fire rings and recreational areas including volleyball courts, picnic areas, common and private areas in the City's Community Center and playground areas; set up for special events or school functions.

* Perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance and upkeep of the golf course including mowing fairways, greens, tees and roughs, raking and edging traps, and weed abatement; edge cart paths and curbs.

* Maintain golf tee boxes and greens; change cups and move tee markers; maintain, rake and remove debris from sand traps; add sand as needed.

* Perform street maintenance duties; prepare surfaces for paving; patch potholes; mix, spread, shovel, rake and roll asphalt and chip seal surfaces.

* Perform curb, gutter and driveway maintenance duties; break up paved surfaces; set forms; mix, pour, spread and finish concrete.

* Paint traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs including cross walks and stop sign markings; install and maintain street signs; install raised traffic bars, guard rails and reflectors.

* Provide traffic control in assigned maintenance areas; place cones, barriers and signs to define the work area and protect the public; excavate and fill trenches and ditches.

* Maintain, repair, install, pumps, circuit breakers, relays, water lines and television camera inspection equipment.

* Remove and repair various mechanical components including those related to the municipal swimming pool; dismantle, repair and replace pump and compressor parts; replace lift station pumping equipment.

* Inspect, maintain and repair clay, galvanized steel, plastic, fiberglass and other types of pipes.

* Perform various repair and maintenance duties to City buildings and facilities; perform a variety of semi-skilled building trade duties including carpentry, plumbing, heating, cooling, plumbing, painting, furniture moving, roof repair, and minor electrical work.

* Perform general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings; patch roofs and replace tiles; paint inside and outside of buildings; perform concrete work as needed; install door locks; install doors.

* Repair and maintain a variety of plumbing fixtures and fittings including valves, sinks, fountains, faucets and related devices.

* Perform minor electrical repairs; change light bulbs and ballasts; blown fuses and circuit breakers.

* Remove graffiti from buildings and playgrounds; repaint surfaces as required.

* Conduct set up, take down and maintenance of hospitality equipment, including portable stage and dance floor, risers, audio-visual equipment.

* Perform routine inspection, servicing and maintenance of computerized swimming pool systems, including water and chemical testing and servicing of pool heaters and filtration systems.

* May participate in rotational shifts including weekend and Standby/On-Call shifts as required. Employees assigned to Standby or On-Call duty must be available to respond and report to work within a reasonable amount of time, typically within forty-five (45) minutes of the receipt of the call.

* Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

* At least two (2) years of maintenance and repair experience in the assigned program area.

Education/Training:

* Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Licenses and Certificates:

* A valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.

* Possession of or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within twelve (12) months of appointment is highly desirable.

Examination & Selection Process:

Application Review:

The Human Resources Division must receive a completed City of Coronado employment application and resume. The review date may be extended. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.

Examination Process:

Applicants considered most qualified after the application review process will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview (100%). Additionally, applicants may be requested to undertake any or all of the following exercises - written assessment, practical, or presentation - as part of the evaluation process.

Department Interview:

The top candidates will be invited to a department interview with Public Services Manager and other department personnel.

Candidate Selection:

The selected candidate will be issued a conditional offer, subject to the successful completion of background check and medical examination including a drug screen.

All candidates who successfully obtain a 70% or above in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six months.
