DEFINITION: Responsible for operating assigned sanitation equipment in support of division operations.REPORTS TO: The Sanitation Route Coordinator assigns work in terms of general instructions.An incumbent in this position may be designated as SANITATION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I,II or III dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant.SALARY RANGE: $19.48 - $29.22 (SANITATION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I) $20.45 - $30.68 (SANITATION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II) $21.48 - $32.21 (SANITATION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR III)Operator may be required to work weekends and holidays as necessary. Normal work scheduled is Tuesday through Friday 6:30 am to 4:30 pm. JOB REQUIREMENTS JOB REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator I
- Operator must be able to operate semi-automated side loading or rear loading trucks to provide service, following division policies and schedules, to rollout carts, recycling carts or yard waste carts as well as other discarded materials which may involve collection/loading by hand in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operate the Front End Loader to collect commercial dumpster per route requirements.
- Operate Grab All/Knuckle Boom truck with skill and accuracy to perform collection of various solid Waste material through a define route.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post trip inspections on all assigned equipment utilizing division forms to document vehicle conditions, to note any mechanical defects and to report mechanical problems to the maintenance coordinator for resolution. Return completed inspection forms to the division office at the completion of each day's assigned route.
- Maintain both interior and exterior vehicle cleanliness including all hidden compartments.
- Accurately fill out daily route sheets for all routes serviced by use of semi-automated side loading or rear loading trucks to capture collection times, weights, routes assisted on, carts needing repairs and other data as needed. Return the completed form at the completion of each day's assigned route.
- Courteously inform the public of proper container use and collection rules utilizing courtesy cards when possible. Inform proper supervisory personnel of collection problems which require resolution.
- Maintain good working relationships with fellow employees.
- Operator may be assigned to perform other related tasks as assigned.
- Responsible for the safe operation of a variety of heavy equipment while performing different collection activities following equipment operation guidelines, traffic laws, City and division policies and procedures.
- Operator must be able to communicate with residents, co-workers, supervisory personnel and other division personnel to resolve problems associated with assigned collection activities.
- Operator must be able to accurately follow and fill out documentation associated with daily assigned collection tasks including but not limited to pre-trip/post-trip inspection forms, daily route sheets and other associated daily activity reports. Accurate capture of data for each of these forms is used to ensure safe and efficient operation of vehicles as well as provide documentation about daily tasks completed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator II
- Operate a specialized dual drive fully automated truck on residential routes and collects residential solid waste or recyclables in 96-gallon carts at curbside on prescribed routes according to established department procedures and schedules.
- Operate the Front-End Loader to collect commercial dumpster per route requirements.
- Operate Grab All/Knuckle Boom truck with skill and accuracy to perform collection of various solid Waste material through a define route.
- Dump the carts into a hopper on the right side of the truck utilizing a joystick, mechanical arm and cameras.
- Operate the packer to pack and dump materials collected.
- Operate equipment in a safe and proper manner to reduce accidental damage and extend equipment life.
- Collect between 600 and 900 homes per day as a one-man crew.
- Conduct pre and post trip inspections of the truck utilizing Division forms to check the designated items, note mechanical defects and report all mechanical problems to the maintenance coordinator for resolution.
- Perform weekly lubrication per truck specifications.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness on the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Return complete forms to the Division office daily.
- Accurately fill out daily route sheets with required information concerning collection times, weight, routes assisted on, and other data as needed.
- Return completed forms to the Division office daily.
- Advise public of waste storage and collection rules as needed to correct problems and answer questions
- Perform related tasks as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator III
- Operates assigned equipment to provide service to dumpsters at commercial and multi-family residential locations.
- Checks fluid levels and air pressure and performs minor maintenance.
- Operate equipment on an assigned route.
- Operates a two-way radio to inform supervisors of collection problems.
- Assists in the operation of the Transfer Station by operating assigned equipment.
- Moves trailers into place to be loaded with solid waste or to be staged for pick up by contract hauler.
- Assists the Heavy Equipment Operator as needed; maintains open floor space on the tipping floor.
- Directs the unloading of trucks.
- Monitors deliveries for hazardous materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator I
- Education equivalent to a high school degree is required.
- Valid North Carolina CDL-B or higher driver's license.
- Experience in the operation of automated/semi-automated side loading or rear loading trucks is preferred.
- At least one year of MSW refuse collection or related solid waste collection I preferred.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator II
- Education equivalent to a high school degree is required.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the major duties of the position usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.
- Considerable experience in the operation of motorized and hydraulic equipment; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace and under various weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; ability to perform routine lubrication procedures; ability to read and understand a map.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina CDL-B driver's license. Ability to obtain a Class A License within 6 months of hire.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Sanitation Equipment Operator III
- Education equivalent to a high school degree is required.

Operators may also be required to stoop, crouch, twist, toss, carry, bend and lift other residential solid waste/yard waste. These activities may require team lifting of bulky, cumbersome materials or waste. Collection of these materials involves short periods of sitting while driving as well as constant walking or standing. Operator must have the ability to perform continuous manual work at a steady pace and under various weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; ability to read and understand a map.
