Pacific Environment is campaigning to end fossil fuel use, including to get ships, planes, and ports off fossil fuels entirely. Our strategies include creating strong regulatory frameworks to achieve zero-emission shipping on a timeline commensurate with the climate emergency, pressuring corporate customers to demand zero-emission ships, and influencing ports on the Pacific West Coast and beyond to end fossil fuel build out and ready themselves for zero-emission shipping instead.

Position

Pacific Environment is looking for a Shipping and Ports Associate to support Pacific Environment's climate emergency shipping campaign objectives in the Republic of Korea (RoK). The successful candidate will have experience in developing strategy, advocacy and project management and coordination, and a passion for solving the climate crisis. We are excited to pursue new opportunities to help RoK meet its climate pledge and broaden Pacific Environment's climate related work in South Korea, including bringing expertise on clean energy, shipping and shipbuilding, port, and other freight policy expertise and supporting grassroots capacity building.

The Shipping and Ports Associate will report to Pacific Environment's Country Director, Republic of Korea, and will be part of Pacific Environment's global climate team.

Location and Travel

This position has a flexible work location within South Korea, but proximity to Seoul or Busan is preferred. The position will involve domestic, and possibly international, travel. Pacific Environment is sensitive to COVID-19 and other potential obstacles to safe travel.

Responsibilities

  • Co-develop and manage Pacific Environment's shipping and ports decarbonization efforts in Republic of Korea to achieve zero-emission shipping on a 1.5C decarbonization timeline
  • Lead engagement with academics, NGO partners, port communities, ports, and government stakeholders; Monitor/Track relevant stakeholder's progress and strategy on maritime decarbonization
  • Track team's progress against team goals; draft program updates for donors reporting.
  • Facilitate routine review of our strategies and programmatic priorities; lead coordination of strategic planning processes.
  • Maintain an effective knowledge and document management system for team
  • Support research and analysis including policies, science and technical issues related to ZE ports and shipping
  • Research, write, proofread, and edit a variety of program materials including but not limited to fact sheets, comment letters, memos, blogs, other advocacy products as needed.
  • Creating and maintaining campaign trackers, including contact lists, event calendars, and policy advocacy trackers
  • Administrative, meeting, and logistics support for campaign activities, key meetings and events; update the Korean Ports for People website with new and relevant content
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Country Director, Republic of Korea

Key Qualifications

  • 7+ years of previous work experience, particularly with program, campaign and strategy, management, coordination, and/or event planning at environmental and social change organizations
  • Meticulous attention to detail and quality of work product
  • Korean fluency and excellent Korean writing skills;
  • English proficiency (ability to conduct everyday organizational business in English)
  • Ability to problem-solve and manage competing priorities is essential
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Discretion in maintaining confidential information
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and online research tools is necessary
  • Experience with Dropbox and Microsoft Suite a plus

Physical Requirements

The Shipping and Ports Associate work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time, communicating with co-workers electronically, and frequent travel (including overnight travel), in-person meetings, or events.
