Incumbents must possess knowledge of safe practices related to handling, 2 years experience in cooking, baking and serving food. Positions in this classification may supervise lower level Food Service Workers.Examples of Duties* Prepare and cook, or heat, a variety of foods; estimate quantities needed or adjust recipes to appropriate quantities* Portion food into meal containers; wrap, pack and load containers for delivery to school sites* Make up individual servings for breakfast and lunch* Assist with the sales and collection of money from school breakfasts, lunches or snacks* Count and record funds collected from sales of breakfast and lunch* Assist in maintaining kitchen areas in clean and sanitary condition; clean and stores dishes, utensils, and other food service equipment* Assist with inventory of food supplies and kitchen equipment* Assist other kitchen workers in the performance of their tasks as needed or available* Assume lead role in food service operations in the absence of the Food Service Manager.* Perform related duties and responsibilities as requiredEmployment StandardsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Training: Equivalent to high school graduation.Experience: Two years of experience in preparing and serving foods in an institutional setting; completion of courses in cooking, sanitation, safety, and nutrition is desirable.Knowledge of: Principles and methods of quantity food preparation, serving and storage; sanitation and safety practices related to handling, cooking, baking and serving food; methods of adjusting and extending recipes and proper substitutions; standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements; basic recordkeeping techniques; basic math and cashiering skills.Ability to: Prepare, cook, bake and serve foods in quantity, in accordance with health and sanitation standards; operate and maintain ovens, appliances and cooking utensils; measure food servings; convert recipes to appropriate amounts; maintain routine records; plan and organize work; meet schedules and timelines; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.Physical Requirements: Stamina sufficient to stand for long periods of time; manual dexterity sufficient to handle cooking tools and operate kitchen appliances; physical strength sufficient to push, carry and lift large and heavy (25 lbs.) boxes, sacks of food, pots and kettles.Licenses and Certificates: A position in this class may be required to obtain a Serve-Safe Certificate under provisions of AB 1978.Requirements / QualificationsRequirements / QualificationsResume 2 Letters of Recommendation
