Grenada School District security guards (SSO'S) hold a key position within the hierarchy of the school's law enforcement sphere. A School Safety Officer is a security and safety specialist that provides routine safety and security duties. The School Safety Officer is assigned routine duties that pertain to safety and physical security under the supervision of a School Resource Officer (SRO), Campus Enforcement Officer (CEO), or school administrator. SSO's does not have the authority to carry weapons or make arrests. Duties includes patrols, securing buildings, and addressing anything that may be a safety hazard. All SSO'S are required to successfully complete the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) School Safety Officers Basic Course within 2 years and complete 40 hours of MDE sanctioned in-service training each year in accordance with MS Code (37-7 -321). SSO'S must be at least 18 years old, willing to consent to background check, possess a High School Diploma or GED. SSO's should have no previous record of drug or alcohol dependency and no felonies. Applicants should also not have a history of substance use and be in good physical condition. As a school security guard, you may interact heavily with students of varying ages, so you will need the right communication skills to deal with this group. The school security officer is the first line of defense for the school's security. SSO's are responsible for protecting the school community from hazards and danger. This can include being aware of any suspicious person entering the school ground, helping students cross the roads, and reach their buses safely (in the case of elementary schools), ensuring the safe flow of traffic within hallways, and intervening in conflicts between students on campus. School security guards are responsible for responding to emergencies in a school can be anything from a fight, fire, injury, or active shooter. School security guards are the first authority figure, and staff will turn to in these types of situations. The school security guard should have excellent emergency response skills, know the protocol for various emergency situations and act swiftly. Some duties may include vacating the premises calmly and efficiently and knowing when to call law enforcement, paramedics, or the fire department should a situation require further assistance. SSO's should have exceptional observation and communication skills, customer service knowledge, proficient writing skills, integrity, and empathy. Additionally, be able to be mindful, be a critical thinker, and work in a team setting. S ecurity of district personnel and property.
