General Summary of PositionUnder administrative direction and in collaboration with Clinical Program Leadership coordinates the VAD Program to include both FDA approved and investigational devices. Oversees all durable device training, management, inpatient and outpatient care. Works with physicians in managing VAD databases, including data analysis for oral and written presentations related to the VAD program. Participates in VAD-related clinical trials. Independently provides 24-hour on-call coverage for triage and support of VAD patients and staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees, evaluates and directs activities related to managing all durable VADs.
  • Assures adherence to standards set by The Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies.
  • Implements and assures adherence to current clinical standards for VAD supported patients.
  • Evaluate, formulates, and implements policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates the monitoring of patients with ventricular assist devices during procedures and operations.
  • Collaborates with Materials Management, Equipment Technician/Manager and others to maintain device inventory, tracking, and FDA recall response.
  • Coordinates outpatient clinic evaluations of patients supported with a ventricular assist device, including VAD data collection, limited physical exam, and driveline evaluations.
  • Documents and maintains records/charts, and reports patient's condition to appropriate personnel. Records progress notes at appropriate intervals in the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborates with research team on investigational/clinical trials related to ventricular assist devices, to include but not limited to, obtaining research consents, scheduling or coordinating device or protocol related tests and procedures, data collection and submissions, IRB communication and submissions, site audits by sponsors.
  • Working with the clinical managers and industry clinicians, provides extensive training for hospital personnel. Content is defined by role and scope of practice.
  • Works with team to develop order sets, nursing flowsheets and reference charts for VAD patients and clinical staff.
  • Contributes to VAD database entries and participates in the development of oral presentations and manuscripts regarding VAD patient care.
  • Evaluates patients and families' educational needs and develops/implements appropriate teaching programs for patients and families. Provides training for patients and caregivers.
  • Collaborates with industry representatives to interface with industry personnel on behalf of the institution and physicians.
  • Establishes, maintains, and participates in the VAD call schedule.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, etc. and through reading appropriate scientific literature.
  • Minimum QualificationsEducation

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Engineering required

    Experience

    • 3-4 years of progressively more job responsible job-related experience in a tertiary facility required
    • Heart failure and ventricular assist device experience preferred
    • Experience in conducting clinical research trials preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia for those holding a Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • VAD Certification within 1-1/2 Yrs preferred

    This position has a hiring range of $87,318 - $157,289
