ROLE TITLE: Assistant Dean for Global Education

POSITION REPORTS TO: Associate Provost/Academic Affairs

Summary of Position

The Assistant Dean for Global Education will lead and provide vision for all aspects of the Global Education program, including ongoing curation of the study away program portfolio and coordination of and logistical support for faculty-led global learning seminars and international internships. They will also be responsible for publicizing domestic and international study away opportunities and advising students on all aspects of the study away process.

What you will do in this role:

As the Assistant Dean for Global Education, you will:

  • Study Away: Manage and coordinate all aspects of study away, both domestic and international, by advising students consistently and correctly at all stages of the study away process. Includes oversight of applications and relevant scholarship funds, providing pre- and post-departure programming, assisting with program and travel documents (visas, passports, etc) and arrangements. Provide academic advising, consistent with advising guides prepared and maintained in conjunction with academic majors and minors, and serving as the point of contact for students studying away. Curate Allegheny's study away portfolio through ongoing evaluation of sponsored study away programs, making recommendations to governance bodies regarding adoption of new programs or sunsetting existing programs, and providing relevant expertise in the negotiation of program agreements. Coordinate on-campus events (e.g. study away fairs) as relevant to study away programming
  • Global Learning Seminars: Work with faculty and external partners to develop global learning seminars (GLs). Facilitate the programmatic functioning of all aspects of these seminars including developing budgets, providing risk management, overseeing contract renewals and updates, and completing liability paperwork and agreements. Facilitate the student-facing components of GLs including coordinating the application, acceptance, and associated paperwork, developing marketing and recruiting materials and workshops, maintaining an updated web presence, and running information sessions
  • Teaching (up to 4 credits per academic year) in support of experiential learning (EXL) and/or liberal studies (LS) as appropriate based on experience and institutional needs
  • Collaborate with the Registrar's Office to manage and oversee transfer credit evaluation processes for domestic and international study away programs, along with independent international transcript evaluation
  • Consult with and serve on campus committees and working groups as relevant to global education, including providing leadership for the (ad hoc) International Travel Risk Management Committee. Work closely with International Student Services through familiarity with the Student Exchange Visitor Program.
  • Accountable for financial decisions within the administrative unit/department. May provide input to the budgeting process.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's preferred. Will consider years of relevant experience in the field and high education with a Bachelor's degree.
  • 4+ years relevant experience in higher education
  • Knowledge of best practices in education abroad management
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cross-cultural issues
  • Prior experience living, studying, or working abroad
  • Experience teaching in higher education is preferred
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) is preferred
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be willing to drive passenger vans
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally for site visits and other study away business
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to participate in campus events and programming, manage crisis situations pertaining to study away students, and travel

YOUR COMPENSATION

New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

The expected minimum starting salary range for this position is $62,000.
