Opportunity Summary

The CEO role at Upstate Capital Association of New York offers a unique and exciting leadership opportunity to enhance investor connections within the Upstate New York business ecosystem.

As the primary executive leader, you will have the chance to shape the strategic direction, operational excellence, and financial health of the association, working closely with a dedicated Board of Directors. This position allows you to leverage your leadership skills to create and strengthen vital relationships among capital providers, venture capitalists, private equity professionals, and companies seeking funding, significantly enhancing capital access and deal flow in the region.

Upstate Capital has a mission-related organization, the Capital Foundation, a 501c3 educational organization, where we lead and manage programs and solutions for the entrepreneurship community, including the NYBPC, New York's statewide intercollegiate entrepreneurship competition, and Invest NY, New York's innovation ecosystem data platform for mapping and tracking startups and innovation activities across the region.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy

  • Develop and implement the Upstate Capital Association's strategic plan.
  • Represent the association to all stakeholders, including members, partners, and the public.

Operational Management

  • Oversee operational functions ensuring efficient and effective management of resources.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance organizational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor financial performance and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Drive fundraising efforts, including membership drives, sponsorships, and grant applications.

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Supervise staff and volunteers, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Engage and support Board members and volunteers, recognizing their contributions and integrating them into the organization's activities.

Program Development and Management

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of events, programs, and services.
  • Ensure events and programs meet the needs of members and stakeholders.
  • Continuously assess and improve program offerings.

Communication and Advocacy

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the association.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy, including public relations, marketing, and member communications.
  • Advocate for the association's interests at regional, state, and national levels.

Membership Engagement and Development

  • Develop strategies to grow and retain membership.
  • Engage with members to understand their needs and ensure the association provides value.
  • Organize and oversee member events and other activities.

Board Support and Governance

  • Prepare and present regular reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Recruit new Board members.
  • Attend Board meetings and provide support as needed.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience: Producing events, leading a small lean team, and exposure and understanding of private equity, venture capital, and ecosystem development.

  • This position is fully remote, with on-site requirements for events.
  • This position includes up to 30% travel within New York State and occasionally nationally for conferences and meetings.
  • Flexible work schedule, generally 9am-5pm weekdays and attendance at evening events.
  • Ability to drive with a legal driver's license, lift and carry boxes and equipment
