POLICE DEPARTMENT SOCIAL WORKERThis is a full-time position with a starting salary of $60,000.CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION: This is a non-sworn full-time position that is responsible for providing crisis intervention, short-term counseling, advocacy, community outreach, education, and other social service assistance to the Police Department and the Community as needed. Reports directly to the Chief of Police or his designee.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists sworn officers in Crisis Intervention as it relates to the methods used to offer short-term immediate help to individuals who have experienced an event that produces mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral distress through follow-up and referral to appropriate agencies;
  • Conducts interviews and gathers information about occurrences in order to provide service to the community;
  • Serves as a consultant to Police Officers regarding management of cases and/or individuals;
  • Follows up on referrals from Police Officers;
  • May be called upon to provide emergency social service assistance after normal working hours to officers in the field as needed;
  • Compiles and maintains resource material for use by the Police Officers as they assist the community;
  • Provides crisis intervention services to the community as needed;
  • Prepares detailed reports and correspondence as required;
  • Required to maintain client confidentiality;
  • Maintains records and confidential case files;
  • Attends community meetings as a representative of the Police Department in an effort to establish collaborative relationships with the members and organizations of the community;
  • Conducts home visits and provides follow-up services to families as requested by the Police Department Personnel and other members of the community.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Facilitates social service-related training as necessary for the Police Department Personnel;
  • Assists with the management and administration of grants;
  • Acts as a Liaison with the court system;
  • Performs additional duties as required.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS;Bachelor's degree, or higher, in Social Work, Psychology, or other social science-related field with two (2) years experience in the area of social science; Certified Licensed Social Worker.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws and acts applicable to Social Services;
  • Effectively manages and use discretion in crisis situations;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple assignments and task within a reasonable period of time;
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment;
  • Working knowledge of modern office practices, processes and procedures;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, social service agencies and professionals within and outside the community;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid vehicle operator's license; Required to attend continuing education classes as needed; Must be bondable.ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare reports requiring writing, reading, mental reasoning, and interpretation;
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment using hands and fingers;
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as required;
  • Work is performed in an office setting at a desk or table with intermittent standing or stooping, as well as field environments with occasional exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, rain, other inclement weather conditions, and unsanitary conditions.
