The City of Keene is actively recruiting part-time Call Firefighters! Being a Call Firefighter can be a very rewarding experience with opportunities for career advancement. Duties will include responding to calls for emergencies extinguishing fires protecting life and property operating and maintaining fire equipment and quarters and other tasks essential for the safety of the community. Serving as a part-time call firefighter can provide training sponsorship opportunities developing skill sets needed to be a career firefighter. Experience and certification are preferred; however the fire department is willing to provide training for outstanding candidates. Current starting rates as well as pay increases applied with completion of a one-year probationary period are below. Certified Firefighter Level I: $14.20 increased to $16.39 per hour. Certified Level II Firefighters: $15.81 increased to $19.67 per hour. Non-certified candidates: $10.92 per hour with increase to $14.20 per hour with attainment of Firefighter Level I once certification is obtained. Call Firefighters are required to reside within a 30-minute drive of the City's Central Fire Station possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver's license. Must successfully pass NFPA 1582 wellness evaluation; must successfully complete within 12 months of hire of State of New Hampshire Firefighter One and within 18 months Hazardous Awareness/Operations and Decontamination and CPR. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Duties and Responsibilities
(This list details typical tasks and requirements of the position; but is not intended to be all inclusive).
* Shall respond to all requests for assistance at incidents including first alarms; second alarms; code 200's; and when otherwise assigned.
* Reports directly to their assigned Shift Captain. In the absence of the Shift Captain; shall report to a Lieutenant or other senior person in charge.
* When responding to emergency calls; shall report directly to the staging area; and notify Staging Officer of an-ival.
* Shall participate in and regularly attend all assigned monthly training; meetings; department activities; projects; and drills as posted.
* When responding to fire alarms; shall operate auxiliary equipment; lay and connect hose lines; maneuver nozzles; direct fire streams; raise and climb ladders; use chemical extinguishers; bars; hooks; lines; and other equipment in a prescribed fashion; ensuring that such actions are consistent with the instructions of the fire ground Incident Commander; and shall perform salvage operations.
* Shall willingly assist other companies in their assigned tasks.
* Shall have and maintain the physical ability to endure long periods of dexterity in all types of weather conditions.
* Shall obey all orders; rules; and regulations of the department and City.
* When assigned and/or post incident; shall assist in the cleaning and restocking of all apparatus and equipment including washing/hanging of hose.
* Shall report any mechanical or equipment problems encountered promptly to the Officer in Charge.
* Shall not leave their assignment; except with the permission of the Incident Commander.
* Shall constantly direct their best efforts to accomplish tasks assigned to them that end intelligently and efficiently; and shall hold themselves in readiness at all times to answer the calls assigled and obey the orders of their superior officer.
* Identify incidents that are potentially serious public safety problems.
* Coordinate efforts with other members of the department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and maximum achievement of emergency services objectives.
* Maintain protective clothing and other issued gear in a functional; presentable condition.
* Assist citizens requesting assistance or information. Courteously explain any instance where jurisdiction does not lie with the fire department and suggest other procedures to be followed.
* Shall take corrective measures in hazardous or unsafe conditions and report incidents outside their control to the appropriate authority.
* Is required to minimize the liability of the City to this end: shall correct or report any hazards or deficiencies in City buildings; equipment; or rights of way.
* Shall have and maintain the ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.
* Shall maintain all certifications and proficiency while employed.
* Shall have in their possession at all times and maintain a valid NH Driver's License.
* Shall complete required documentation including call slips; training slips; accident forms; injury forms etc. when required.
* Shall perform other duties as assigned
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Employees must be a resident of the City of Keene; or live within five miles of City limits.
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent; as well as a valid driver's license
Must successfully complete State of New Hampshire Firefighter One; Hazardous Awareness/Operations and Decontamination; and CPR within 18 months of hire.
* This position involves light to heavy physical labor. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk or hear. Must have the ability to endure extended periods of intensive physical activity in all types of weather. Must successfully pass NFPA 1582 wellness evaluation.
Work Environment
The noise level is usually moderate to loud. There is occasional exposure to very loud noise. This position frequently involves work in outdoor weather conditions. There is occasional exposure to high or precarious places fumes or airborne particles This position requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke and cramped surroundings Outdoor weather conditions vary depending on the season.
