Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

Note: this position will receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 6.55% which is not reflected in the salary listed in this posting. The effective date of the increase is January 1, 2025 for February 1, 2025 paychecks.

This is a full time, seasonal position with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area near La Grande, OR.

This is a full time, seasonal position from approximately April 1, 2025 through October 31, 2025. (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project's control).

Play a part in maintaining and enhancing wildlife habitat in Oregon!

What you will do:

* Habitat Management: Plant and maintain food crops for wildlife. Monitor and control invasive plant species through the use of herbicides. Manage water levels in wetlands for various habitat types.

* Maintenance and Development: Operate a wide variety of power tools, hand tools, shop tools, pumps, chainsaws, etc. Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on all equipment, farm implements and vehicles. Conduct maintenance on area irrigation ditches and canals.

* Wildlife Capture and monitoring: Monitor waterfowl and upland bird nesting success on area. Assist with wildlife and plant inventories. Assist in wildlife capture. Assist in tagging, collaring, marking or banding wildlife.

Working Conditions

* Work outdoors, at times during inclement weather.

* Work in or near cold, deep or fast moving water for extended periods of time.

* Requires lifting up to 50 pound sacks of feed, and other heavy materials and equipment.

* Operate trucks, tractors and other equipment

* Handle chemicals used for treatment of fish or disinfecting of equipment for disease control purposes. Work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance duties. Required to climb ladders.

* This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

* This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, they must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Criminal Records/DMV Check

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

NOTE: Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department Homeland Security's I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODFW participates in E-Verify. ODFW is not able to support VISA sponsorships.

Minimum Qualifications:

* An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science; OR

* Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.

Requested Skills:

* Fish culture experience in a hatchery setting

* Working with eggs and fry

* Handling adult fish

* Experience with water systems and maintenance

* Operating electronic or mechanical equipment

* Collecting and recording data

* Writing technical or summary reports

* Using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

* Working with the public
