Job Duties
VDOT's Staunton District Winchester Area Headquarters is seeking a highly qualified Highway Maintenance Worker to join their team! As the qualified candidate you will:
* Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance.
* Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributers, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
* Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
* Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. Emergency response may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
* Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection.
Minimum Qualifications
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
* Safety shoes required.
* Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
* Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
* Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
* Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
Additional Considerations
* Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
* Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
* A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
* Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
* Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
