We are seeking a seasoned Head Underwriter to lead our underwriting team and support our mission of delivering exceptional returns through a disciplined, institutional-grade approach to investment.
Position Overview
The Head Underwriter will be responsible for leading and overseeing the underwriting process for all real estate transactions. This individual will work closely with the acquisitions, asset management, and executive teams to evaluate opportunities, assess risks, and ensure that underwriting standards are accurately applied.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Underwriting Process: Manage and oversee the end-to-end underwriting process for real estate acquisitions, developments, and lending opportunities across multiple asset classes, including multifamily, land, office, industrial, and mixed-use properties.
- Asset Valuation & Analysis: Conduct and review in-depth financial modeling, market research, and asset performance evaluations to assess risk-adjusted returns.
- Transaction Structuring: Identify potential risks and provide strategic recommendations to mitigate them while ensuring alignment with investment objectives.
- Team Leadership: Build, train, and manage a high-performing underwriting team, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
- Institutional-Level Standards: Maintain and enhance underwriting guidelines and processes to meet institutional investor expectations.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Collaborate with acquisitions, asset management, and capital markets teams to optimize deal structures and align underwriting with strategic goals.
- Market Expertise: Stay informed about market trends, economic conditions, and industry best practices to inform underwriting decisions.
- Reporting & Presentation: Prepare and present detailed investment memos, sensitivity analyses, and financial projections to the investment committee and executive leadership.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Real Estate, Economics, or a related field; advanced degree or certifications (e.g., CFA, MBA) preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of institutional-level underwriting experience across multiple real estate asset classes.
- Technical Expertise: Expertise in evaluating and structuring complex transactions, including development, value-add, and stabilized assets. Experience underwriting both credit and equity investments.
- Skills: Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, Excel, Argus, and other underwriting tools.
- Leadership: Strong leadership and team management skills with a proven ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
- Competencies: Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Market Knowledge: Deep understanding of market dynamics, capital structures, and risk-adjusted return metrics.
