The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) is the leading trade association for the sportfishing industry, representing manufacturers, retailers, and stakeholders nationwide. Our mission is to look out for the interests of the sportfishing industry and the entire recreational fishing community.
We are seeking an entry-level, dynamic and detail-oriented Public Affairs Assistant to join our team. This individual will play a critical role in advancing ASA's communication and outreach initiatives to support our mission, government affairs regional priorities, and engage the sportfishing community.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and the Public Affairs Manager, the Assistant will provide support to the Communications and Government Affairs teams. The role includes managing various communication tools and platforms, assisting with policy and grassroots outreach efforts, research, writing and contributing to the success of ASA events.
Key Responsibilities:
Grassroots Outreach and Public Affairs
·Assist the Public Affairs Manager in organizing and executing grassroots regional outreach, regularly connecting with regional policy directors, monitoring news and updates, curating important research and sharing important updates on social media.
·Support grassroots engagement in various regions, capturing and sharing relevant content and distributing timely information to stakeholders and partners.
·Support outreach efforts and action alerts using Voter Voice and other digital tools.
·Update and maintain a database of supporters.
· Assist the public affairs manager in building and maintaining up-to-date lists of media contacts and industry representatives.
·Closely coordinate with ASA government affairs policy fellow on projects.
·Attend regional events to engage with stakeholders and collect on-the-ground insights.
Communications Support
·Assist in the creation and distribution of newsletters and updates using MailChimp.
·Assist in the upkeep and accuracy of internal databases to support communication efforts.
·Collaborate on content development for ASA's communications platforms, including website and social media.
· Draft, edit, and disseminate articles and other written materials to promote ASA's regional policy initiatives.
Event Support
·Represent ASA, when necessary, at regional and industry events, distributing promotional materials, managing the ASA booth and/or promoting the organization and its mission.
·Assist marketing efforts and provide onsite logistics support for ASA trade show, annual meeting and government affairs committee meeting.
Qualifications:
·Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, political science, fisheries science or a related field.
·1-3 years of experience working in communications, policy advocacy, and grassroots outreach and/or experience working as a legislative, press or staff assistant in Congress, the Administration, a federal or state agency, political campaigns or a related role. Relevant internship experience may be considered.
·Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
·Proficiency in communication platforms such as MailChimp, Voter Voice, and social media tools.
·Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·Ability to travel as needed to regional events, ICAST and Summit.
·An understanding of fisheries management issues, fish and wildlife conservation, and an interest in fishing and/or outdoor recreation is a plus but not required.
