Salary: $20.48 HourlyLocation : Tyler, TXJob Type: Regular Full-timeJob Number: 994975Department: Stormwater ManagementOpening Date: 01/28/2025 Purpose Of PositionThe purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of motorized street sweeping equipment in the effective, efficient cleaning of City streets, curbs, gutters, parking lots, and public rights-of-way; performs maintenance, repair, and construction as assigned; operates maintenance and construction tools; performs maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of projects or activities of a public works nature. The position requires manual labor, which will be completed alone or as part of a crew. Work includes on-site work, maintenance, cleaning and service equipment, emergency needs, vehicles, tools, and work area. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. This position is designated among essential personnel and reports to work during all significant weather events or emergency incidents. -Direct Supervisor: Stormwater Foreman Essential Functions
- Preforms a variety of labor-intensive duties, including, but not limited to, cleaning vehicles, job sites, and shop/garage, loading and unloading vehicles, trimming and /or removing trees.
- Safely operation of street sweeping equipment to clean assigned routes and emergency locations. Additionally performs maintenance for a variety of vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, lighting systems, brakes, safety devices, fluid levels, preventive maintenance, or other maintenance. Operates other Street Maintenance equipment as necessary including loaders to load asphalt, concrete, and dirt debris into roll-off bins.
- Respond to emergency clean-ups, special and storm drains maintain a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public right-of-way.
- Remains competent and current by attending and completing required trainings.
- Maintains a safe work area, including places and removes cones, barricades, warning devices, and/or directs traffic at work sites; cleans up work sites upon completion of the job; secures the job site if returning later; washes vehicles and equipment as needed; cleans up shop areas; maintains tools and equipment in safe and operable conditions; safe use, mix, and dilute all chemicals according to direction labels; and when operating motor vehicles, observe safe driving principles and practices. Disposes of waste at designated sight cleans and washes vehicles after use.
- Inputs, manages and utilizes inspection and other data and communications using the City Works database and Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Responds to questions, inquiries, and complaints from the public; explains street sweeping procedures and operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of how to safely operate sweeper trucks and the tools necessary to their maintenance.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Suite, Data base management, web applications.
- Ability to adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individually provided PPE in a functional condition. All uniforms and PPE should be clean and equipped when scheduled to work.
- Attend shifts in accordance with company policy. This position is subject to respond to emergencies after normal working hours. Occasional overtime required. Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift change.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, representative of outside agencies, and general public. Both verbal and written communication, including conveying and following instructions and providing information to the public. Understand and follow instruction and communicate effectively, as required.
- Knowledge and adherence to all applicable State and Federal laws; local ordinances; City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Knowledge and adherence to Texas Motor Vehicle Code and other codes, laws and statues relating to the given position.

- Must have a strong work ethic and able to manage time to effectively meet deadlines.
Physical characteristics: Job requires to be able to twist and kneel up to 6-hours daily: bend, turn, climb, crouch, and crawl up to 2 hours daily; stoop up to 3 hours daily; walk, sit, and stand up to 4 hours daily; grasp objects up to 8 hours daily, lift and carry up to 80-lbs., push or pull up to 20-lbs., grasp up to 8-hours. May be exposed to vehicular traffic and must follow all maintenance of traffic (MOT) procedures.Environmental factors: This is an essential department, all staff will be called to SERVE with all storms, catastrophes, emergencies or as otherwise needed. Physical ability to work under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time. Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience: Must have three (3) years of experience in construction maintenance work or one (1) year of experience as a Street Sweeper Operator as well as mechanical experience to make minor repairs on the equipment listed above. Must have Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement and a clear driving record.High School diploma or GED preferred. An equivalent combination of education, experience, or training may be considered.
