Role Summary:

The Director of Health and Wellness will lead and develop wellness programming across the Meriwether portfolio. This role will oversee fitness activities, spa and wellness services, and group exercise offerings, with a focus on delivering exceptional experiences to members and guests. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in fitness and wellness modalities, with a passion for creating innovative and engaging wellness experiences and a strong managerial background.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fitness Programming: Develop and oversee fitness activities, personal training programs and group exercise classes (including yoga and Pilates).
  • Wellness Programming: Research and implement emerging “hands-free” wellness modalities to enhance guest experiences. Specific experience in light therapy, halo therapy and hydrotherapy practice is preferred.
  • Staff & Contractor Management: Recruit, train, and oversee guest service staff, spa employee, and fitness independent contractors, ensuring top-tier service delivery.
  • Member & Guest Engagement: Serve in a hands-on capacity, including teaching classes, offering personal instruction, and engaging with members on both wellness and fitness needs in the facility.
  • Facility & Equipment Oversight: Contribute to gym and wellness equipment selection and layout to optimize member experience and operational efficiency.
  • Operational Excellence: Collaborate with property teams to ensure fitness and wellness services align with Meriwether's brand standards and financial objectives.
  • Budget & Financial Management: Oversee budgeting, pricing, and financial performance of wellness programs, ensuring profitability while maintaining high service standards.
  • Marketing & Promotions: Collaborate with the marketing team to develop promotional materials, social media content, and special event programming to drive participation.
  • Safety & Risk Management: Ensure all wellness areas meet safety and sanitation standards, and implement best practices for injury prevention and liability reduction.
  • Performance Metrics & Reporting: Track and analyze participation, revenue, and guest satisfaction metrics, adjusting programs as needed to optimize performance.
  • Employee Training & Development: Provide ongoing training and mentorship to wellness staff to enhance service quality and professional growth.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education & Credentials: Certified Personal Trainer (NASM, ACE, ACSM, or equivalent) required; additional certifications in yoga, Pilates, or wellness coaching are a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a management role overseeing both fitness and hands-free spa services, ideally within a hospitality, private club, or luxury resort setting.
  • Industry Expertise: Experience in private club wellness, luxury hospitality, or high-end resort environments preferred.
  • Business Acumen: Strong operational and financial understanding to drive program profitability and member engagement.
  • Facility Design Knowledge: Experience in gym/spa equipment selection and wellness treatment modality efficacies.
  • Travel Commitment: Based in San Diego, CA, with regional travel to portfolio properties as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on computers or participating in meetings. Ability to actively demonstrate exercises, teach group classes, and assist members with fitness equipment.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including domestic and international travel, to project and property locations.
  • Must be comfortable working in fitness centers, spas, and outdoor wellness spaces, with occasional standing, walking, bending, or lifting (up to 50 pounds).
  • Strong visual acuity for reviewing detailed financial documents, contracts, and reports.
  • Willingness to work a dynamic schedule, including weekends and holidays, based on program and member needs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interactions in person, over the phone, and via video conferencing.
