Michaels is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Director of Payroll to lead our payroll department and ensure the accurate and timely processing of employee compensation. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in payroll administration, compliance with relevant regulations, and expertise in payroll software systems. This role involves overseeing payroll operations, managing payroll-related inquiries, and implementing best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy. The Director of Payroll will also collaborate closely with HR and finance teams to ensure seamless integration of payroll data and support organizational goals.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day payroll operations in partnership with our managed payroll vendor, ensuring accurate and efficient delivery of our weekly and bi-weekly payroll.
  • Oversee maintenance of the Payroll system, including updating earnings/deduction code setup and tax jurisdiction components, setting up the Payroll processing calendar, setting up the accrual for accounting, and any year-end adjustments where necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with Human Resources policies, Payroll policies, and wage laws.
  • Stay current with changes to tax laws and verify that payroll payments comply with federal, state, and local policies. Manage the preparation and issuance of W-2 statements for all associates.
  • Responsible for the overall and timely processing and payment of payroll for all entities.
  • Manage all Federal, State, and Local payroll tax payments, filings, compliance, and reporting for all entities.
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the payroll department, monitoring the workload and ensuring all teammates have the necessary tools to be successful.
  • Maintain the integrity of the payroll system, including all payroll reports.
  • Implement and analyze quarterly internal audits.
  • Set up, maintain, and continually improve internal processes and procedures.
  • Assist management with recommendations on financial, fiscal, and payroll matters.
  • Coordinate reporting preparation for required year-end projects.
  • Generate accurate payroll reports, including summaries of gross pay, taxes, deductions, and other relevant financial data for management review.
  • Conduct regular payroll audits to identify and resolve discrepancies, reconciling payroll accounts with financial records.
  • Oversee the entire payroll cycle, including time and attendance tracking, salary calculations, deductions, garnishments, and benefit administration.
  • Lead and manage a team of payroll professionals, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and task assignments.
Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years' experience working in an automated multi-state payroll environment, including previous leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience using an automated payroll software system (SuccessFactors preferred).
  • Strong knowledge and application of Multi-State Payroll laws, including garnishments for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Required Education/Training:

  • 4-year degree in accounting is preferred but not required.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation preferred.

  • Ability to execute tasks accurately and timely while managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to present recommendations based on analysis and lead on implementing changes.
  • Experience influencing senior management and working cross-functionally with other areas in Finance and the business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and process improvement mindset.
  • Proven ability to identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Salary Range Information

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the targeted base salary for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
