Job Description :
Staff Scientist Position in the Stable Isotope and Metabolomic Core (SIMC) Facility

The Stable Isotope and Metabolomic Core Facility at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Irwin J. Kurland MD PhD, Director, seeks a highly motivated Mass Spectrometric Specialist for a Staff Scientist position.

The SIMC Facility serves as a mass spectrometric analytic chemistry analysis resource for the biomedical community in New York City, with extensive interactions with researchers at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, NYU, Columbia, Cornell and Sloan Kettering. We specialize in the performance of mass spectrometric based methods for assessing metabolomic, lipidomic, and fluxomic interactions in vivo, and in vitro tissue culture/organoid models.

Our instrumentation includes, for targeted studies, a Sciex 6500+ QTRAP with Selexion Differential Mobility Separation and Aquity UPLC, a Waters Absolute Triple Quadrapole MS with DESI (Desorption electrospray ionization) Imaging source as well as an ESI source, and an Agilent 8890 single quadrapole GC with 5977B Inert Plus Mass Spectrometer Detector (MSD) Turbo. For untargeted MS studies, we recently obtained a Waters Cyclic Ion Mobility Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer with a DESI imaging source, providing precise collisional cross section values and ion mobility separations. We also have specialized software suites for untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic discovery and untargeted imaging analysis.

The candidate will be primarily responsible for projects involving MS Imaging and untargeted metabolomic, lipidomics and fluxomics utilizing the Waters Cyclic IMS TOF. Ideally, the candidate should have experience with chemical extractions and derivatizations that enable higher sensitivity GC and LC/MS analyses, as well as untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic discovery. Experience using DESI mass spec imaging on lipids and small metabolites and performing stable isotope flux analysis on individual samples is preferred, however, we can provide training. We especially seek team players who can work closely with others to manage collaborative projects.

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, or an allied discipline and/or evidence of 3-4+ years of relevant mass spectrometric experience. Experience with using R, MATLAB and Python preferred. If due to graduate, the candidate must have completed their thesis and have a definite graduate date in order to apply for any VISAs, if needed.
  • A background in molecular biology, protein chemistry, or cell biology is helpful.

Compensation:

  • Salary starts at $80,000 per year and is commensurate with experience.
  • Einstein offers an excellent and competitive benefits package.
  • The Staff Scientist position is a faculty, not union, position.

How to apply:

  • Candidates should forward the following items directly to Irwin J. Kurland MD PhD (Director) and Yunping Qiu PhD (Operations Manager): ...@einsteinmed.edu, ...@einsteinmed.edu
  • Names and contact information for three referees
