Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director Network Engineering, the Network Engineer provides network and voice system installation, problem determination, resolution, configuration, and needs analysis to support the use of technology by faculty, staff, and students.
The engineer provides support for all aspects of the various University data center facilities and communications closets. The engineer works with other staff including application development and security.
This position may require occasional evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Essential Functions
- Implements cutting-edge technologies designed by the infrastructure team.
- Configures network switches, VPNs, optical hardware, and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) systems.
- Conducts research on emerging technologies to support data, VoIP, conferencing systems, and WiFi.
- Deploys wireless network infrastructures and provides recommendations for system enhancements.
- Recommends IT solutions to address business and management challenges.
- Provides support for the university's building management systems.
- Acts as a functional expert, planning and executing major aspects/components of projects.

- Monitors and analyzes data to improve system performance.
- Monitors network usage and security issues.
- Deploys patches to mitigate threats to systems.
- Responds to issues affecting the network architecture.
- Supports ticket resolution associated with the network architecture.
- Contributes to evaluating resource requirements for projects.
- Communicates project status, progress, and impact to management.
- Participates in weekend coverage as needed.
- Identifies critical success factors for test plans.
- Stays informed of current industry trends and best practices.
Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in a computer related field; or in lieu of the degree, minimum 4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience with Routers, switches, hubs, access points, modems, and gateways.
- Experience using Diagram tools such as lucidChart and Visio.
Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills
- Working knowledge of Network protocols such as TCP/IP, OSI model, and DNS.
- Working knowledge of network architectures such as WAN, LAN, VLAN, and WLAN.
- Working knowledge of Routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, RIP, and EIGRP.
- Familiarity with security standards like SSL/TLS, SSH, and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).
- Understanding of cabling for various applications such as Ethernet, fiber optics and coaxial.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
- Familiarity with network management tools such as SolarWinds, WUG.
- Knowledge of IP Addressing and Subnetting.
- Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design, operations and management in Aruba network environment.
- Working knowledge of network test equipment.
- Working knowledge of wide area communications using optical systems.
- Ability to handle sensitive organizational issues with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Working knowledge of Optical systems; VoIP and other real-time applications; SDN; Firewalls and VPN.
- Experience Supporting complex systems architectures, specifications and applications.
- Resource acquisition and management.
- Execution of project plans and delivery of results.
- Analytical/problem solving and technical skills.
- Customer service experience.
- Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty and students.
- Work experience and validated training with IT certification will be considered.
Minimum Starting Salary: $70,500
Maximum Starting Salary: $88,000
Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
