Reports to: Associate Director of Security

Role: Exempt, full-time with benefits

Salary range: $52,000-$55,000 depending on experience

This is an onsite, Boston-based position. Local candidates strongly preferred. No agencies, please.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Security, the Security Manager will provide for the day-to-day security of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the collection. The Security Manager is responsible for the management and supervision of all Security Officers during the business and non-business hours of the Museum.

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities

Team Management
  • Schedule, assign, manage, and supervise Security personnel to ensure adequate coverage, including Watch Desk and Control Room assignments.
  • Provide training to guards for all established posts and duties.
  • Complete performance appraisals for guard staff.
  • Provide effective on-the-spot counseling to guards regarding performance.
Customer Service Orientation
  • Inspect all guard posts throughout the day to ensure that excellent security services are being provided.
  • Assist in providing emergency assistance to visitors and staff.
Demeanor and Interpersonal Relationships
  • Set an example for Security staff in terms of professionalism.
  • Treat all people with respect and dignity and ensure the team is doing the same.
  • Intervene in disputes between Security staff and visitors as needed to provide a positive outcome for all parties.
Problem Solving
  • Work evenings and weekends based on operational necessity; and, be on-call during non-business hours.
  • Effectively address multiple responsibilities with an ability to think proactively to ensure smooth overall management of Security operations on a day-to-day basis.
Protocols
  • Maintain competency with basic procedures for all Security systems.
  • Follow all ISGM Security-related procedures and other Museum policies.
  • Play an active role in emergency management, including both tests and actual events.
Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Interact with and assist Museum management and staff in Security-related matters.
  • Provide relief or assume duties in the galleries, at the Watch Desk or Control Room when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in security.
  • Must possess information technology skills sufficient to administer critical software and equipment.
  • CPR/AED certification (may be obtained during annual re-certification).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to lead people and to provide effective guidance and training.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations.
  • Commitment to advancing the ISGM's strategic goals and values.
  • Must be able to work evenings and on weekends and to be on call based on operational needs.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs, steep inclines, and ladders (including a ship-style ladder).
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time (e.g., room monitoring or patrols).
  • Must be able to walk through wet conditions.
  • Must be able to operate reliably at heights.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum background check process.

Desirable

  • Museum and/or non-profit experience.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience preferred.
