Job Location : Woolbeding, UK

Job Description :
Summary

We’re looking for an experienced countryside ranger who’s ready for a new challenge. You’ll be working at the forefront of nature conservation and land management on a brand new exciting project helping with the creation of hundreds of acres of naturally regenerating woodland and wood pasture on former arable land. Species recovery and reintroduction as well as stakeholder management will be key focus areas of the role.

Some occasional weekend and bank holiday working will be required, but only as part of a rota which includes the rest of the countryside team, on average it works out as being on call and helping with livestock checking one weekend a month. What it's like to work here

We are looking for someone to join the team with a focus on the Woolbeding Reimagined project. The project is creating a new future for over 175 hectares of former arable land and reimagining its future as woodland and woodpasture created through natural process with the aim of maximising benefit for wildlife and creating a sustainable future for its highly erodible soils. As well as large scale habitat creation the project has a grand vision for species reintroduction and recovery work as well as creating a vibrant new future for the section of the wonderful River Rother which flows through the centre of the Estate. Working at the cutting edge of nature conservation on a project which has landscape scale vision and principles we are looking for someone who can engage with people, help drive forward the project and demonstrate a passion for species recovery at a large scale. Experience of working with or demonstrating a knowledge of Woodland Creation and Wild Flower recovery would be an advantage.

What you'll be doing

As the Area Ranger, you’ll be recruiting and managing a team of volunteers for the Woolbeding project. As you develop a flexible and effective programme of work, you’ll be guided both by business needs and by the Trust’s strategy for restoring nature and enabling everyone to enjoy the countryside.

Your role is crucial in meeting the Trust’s high standards of presentation and property maintenance. You’ll build strong and positive relationships with colleagues, contractors, tenants and neighbouring land managers.

You’ll introduce a wide variety of people to the importance of your nature conservation work through events, guided walks and engaging the local community. And you’ll look for ways to raise funds for the Trust through innovative business ideas.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • experienced in managing land, nature conservation and access for people, including running small projects and supervising contractors
  • used to developing and running programmes of work to achieve specific goals in conservation or access
  • a strong team player, with a track record in leading and managing staff and volunteers
  • practical and skilled in looking after a range of habitats and landscapes, with certificates in chainsaw use, tractor driving and towing trailers
  • able to work safely, and take the lead on compliance – including writing risk assessments, and safety and environmental procedures
  • happy to talk – with enthusiasm and commitment – to all kinds of people about the work you do and why it matters
  • a driver, with a full UK licence.
