Summary

We’re looking for an experienced Ranger who’s ready for a new challenge. You’ll be working at the forefront of nature conservation and land management, managing a dedicated team in a landscape that’s important for its rural communities, agriculture, wildlife and loved by millions of visitors.

What it's like to work here

Located in the heart of the Lake District World Heritage Site, the North and West Lakes is the largest portfolio within the National Trust comprising of 33,000 hectares spread across 6 valleys. Caring for temperate rainforest and ancient woodland, peatlands, common land and iconic mountains and lakes, you’ll play a key role in protecting this important landscape. 

What you'll be doing

Working across Borrowdale and Newlands, you’ll be managing a team of rangers, developing an effective programme of work for your team guided both by business needs and by the Trust’s strategy for restoring nature and enabling everyone to enjoy the countryside. 

You’ll work with farm tenants to deliver practical conservation projects that enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable land use. You’ll assist in planning and implementing initiatives like restoring habitats, managing woodlands, and improving water quality, while supporting farmers to integrate nature-friendly practices into their operations.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re: 

  • experienced in managing land, nature conservation and access for people, including running small projects and manging contractors  
  • experienced in working with farm tenants and engaging with rural communities with excellent communication skills and an ability to engage with empathy and understanding
  • a strong team player, confident in developing and running programmes of work, with a track record in leading and managing people and volunteers 
  • confident and skilled in completing and supervising practical land management, with relevant qualifications
  • able to take the lead on compliance with a strong knowledge of safety and environmental procedures such as tree safety management, access management and ensuring visitor safety
  • knowledge of Agri-environment schemes
  • happy to talk – with enthusiasm and commitment – to all kinds of people about the work you do and why it matters
  • full UK driving licence
