Join our new Eating Disorder Service in Midhurst in West Sussex as an Associate Specialist where you will provide care for young adults between the ages of 18-25 years in our newly established service.

Your role will involve assessment and treatment, of both physical and mental health concerns, of the young people under our care. You will support the consultant in the assessment of patients referred to the service and will be expected to complete regular mental state reviews, as well as monitoring for side effects of medication. You will also take the lead on monitoring the physical health of the patients in our care, including monitoring of physical risk in relation to the MEED guidance. You may need to liaise with colleagues in general medical services in relation to concerns such as the physical effects associated with refeeding and the physical complications of eating disorders. You will work closely with the ward manager, consultant and wider MDT to create individualised formulations and treatment plans. You will also play an active part in multi-disciplinary risk assessment, and the creation of robust risk management plans.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Take the lead on physical health assessment and management of physical health conditions, under the supervision of the consultant.
  • Assess patients referred to the service – including taking a comprehensive history, obtaining collateral information, and performing mental state examinations.
  • Participate in weekly ward rounds & attend multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Assuring the involvement of families and carers wherever possible in treatment planning (contingent on patients’ consent).
  • Attend Care Programme Approach meetings, Section 117 meetings & mental health review tribunals. You will be expected to provide up to date clinical information for these meetings.
  • Ensure that medical decisions are implemented as planned.
  • Participate in the on-call rota including one weekend per month.
  • Ensuring an adequate handover to colleagues including out of hours when on call.
  • Completing discharge letters/reports/s62 forms as required in a timely manner.
  • Preparing First-tier Tribunal and Hospital Managers' hearing reports under the supervision of the Consultant.
  • Depending on experience, you may be required to provide oral evidence at First-tier Tribunal and Hospital Managers' hearings under the supervision of the Consultant.
  • Deputies the consultant when on annual leave
  • Contributing to the service development by participating in Clinical Governance activities, conducting audits, conducting research and teaching.
  • Work effectively with colleagues to ensure that patients always have access to appropriate medical cover.

As an Associate Specialist, you will have:

  • Full GMC registration
  • Experience working in psychiatry within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • To be in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • To have had an appraisal/RITA within the last year
  • At least 2 years' experience in Psychiatry
  • Experience working as a doctor within similar environment (desirable)
  • MRC Psych (desirable)
  • Section 12 (2) approval (desirable)
  • Sound medical skills and knowledge.
  • Understanding of the importance of excellent team working relationships and ability to put this into practice.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Committed to continued professional development.
