Our opportunity

We are looking for exceptional individuals to join our apprenticeship programme at City Hall, home of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. On offer is the chance to get hands-on experience working with one of our many and varied teams while also studying for a nationally recognised apprenticeship standard and qualification.

This business administration apprenticeship is an 18-month long opportunity. You will work in a real job role with the GLA for 80% of your working hours and study toward the apprenticeship for the remaining 20% (equivalent of 1 day a week). You will learn a range of skills, behaviours and knowledge, covering topics such as business communication, organisation and problem solving whilst working towards a Business Administration Level 3 qualification.

You will be supported to make the most of your time with the Greater London Authority (GLA), with on and off the job training and plenty of opportunities to contribute to work across the organisation. We will expect commitment and enthusiasm, in return we promise a chance to contribute to the future of London and learn a fantastic range of skills.

An apprenticeship is a structured programme of learning, a combination of on and off the job training. On the job, an apprentice works alongside GLA staff, off the job they undertake a tailored training programme, working towards a nationally recognised level 3 qualification in Business Administration.

Business administrators at the Greater London Authority (GLA) possess a versatile set of skills applicable across various sectors, including public service and community engagement. The role may involve working independently or collaboratively within teams, focusing on developing, implementing, and enhancing administrative services that support London’s diverse needs.

This role is designed for individuals who have a keen interest in public service and the workings of local government and are looking to develop their skills in a dynamic public sector environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting various departments within the GLA and engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contributing to the efficiency of the organization by adding value and resolving issues as they arise.
  • Actively participate in your own development plan under the supervision of your line manager and the training provider.

GLA Business Administrators will demonstrate strong communication skills and a proactive approach to their work. They are expected to manage priorities effectively, solve problems, and uphold the integrity and values of the GLA.

Within your apprenticeship you will receive structured training and support, including

  • Complete a Business Administration Level 3 qualification funded by the GLA. You will work in a real job role with the GLA for 80% of your working hours and study toward the apprenticeship for the remaining 20% (equivalent of 1 day a week).

  • Opportunities to attend workshops and training sessions

Progression following the apprenticeship

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification which will improve your chances of finding work either within the GLA or with another employer or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship elsewhere.

GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential

  • Be 16 years old or older (up to any age) at the start of the apprenticeship (March 2025).
  • Have lived in, or have the right to work in the UK, EEA, Switzerland, Gibraltar or the UK and/or its Overseas Territories for at least the previous 3 years (as part of the funding requirement).
  •  Not currently qualified in Business Administration at Level 3 or higher, or an equivalent qualification.
  • You must have left full-time education by the time the apprenticeship starts (March 2025), and not be in receipt of funding for other formal learning programmes.
  • Basic IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications

Selection Process

1) Apply online via the link below and answer the key competency questions. You will be asked which of the different teams you want to work for. You may select up to 4 teams. You will also be asked for some background information, including diversity questions – these are for monitoring purposes only and have no effect on selection outcomes. 2) We will then shortlist your application based on your responses, and successful candidates will be invited for further assessments and interview. 

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record (DBS) check but some roles may require additional security screening.
