  The Role

To provide ongoing technical support to staff and students in the Construction Crafts Department of The City of Liverpool College, based at our Vauxhall Road Centre. The departmental facilities include workshops in the following craft areas, Plumbing, Electrical, Painting & Decorating, Multiskills, Carpentry & Joinery, Plastering and Brickwork.  The role will be based within the Plumbing Department, however as and when required you will support other trade areas. 

Key Responsibilities
  • To provide technical support for the Construction Craft staff and students, and at times, the other departments within the School.
  • To be responsible for supervising workshop spaces including the maintenance of tools and equipment and to prepare plans and schedules that meet the requirements of planned activities.
  • To liaise with the Deputy Head of School to ensure an inventory list is in place and accounted for, to maximise the effectiveness of all specialist resources.
  • To work in collaboration with the Technician Supervisor to ensure both facility and resource upgrades are monitored, and equipment is kept current to industry standards (finance permitting.)
  • To use own specialist knowledge within Construction Crafts to carry out a range of specialist and diverse tasks to support an effective, user friendly and professional service.
  • To provide general support for the teaching of students in the area. 
  • To set up and operate a range of equipment to an agreed service level.
  • To demonstrate a range of equipment to staff/students and instruct them on the safe use of equipment and techniques.
  • To support the design of the equipment/workshop layout.
  • To carry out regular maintenance tasks; including a range of testing to ensure equipment remains in a good working condition. This will include more complex equipment which may require a licence to operate.
  • To establish systems to ensure accurate records of maintenance are kept.
  • To transport goods and equipment using trolleys/vehicles around the School.
  • To undertake risk assessments to ensure risks are understood and mitigated.
  • To comply with internal and external health and safety guidelines, instructions and regulations.
  • To monitor levels of stocks and consumables and order replacements in line with the college financial regulations.
  • Where it is identified as necessary, handle cash/cash equivalents.
  • Comply with college security, stock control, cash handling procedures, standards and audit requirements.
  • Comply with financial regulations within own area of work.
  • Ensure high levels of customer service promoting a positive image of the College at all times.
  • Resolve problems and issues, diagnose faults and respond to complaints and queries, and where necessary refer on to the appropriate person.
  • Comply with set quality standards and procedural instructions.
  • Attend/arrange meetings as requested to support the work activities.
  • Help to ensure, through good working practices, that the objectives, values and aims of the college are achieved on time.

  • Carry out any such other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of a post of this grade, that may from time to time be required at a location determined by the needs of the service.
  • To make full use of new technology in all aspects of job requirements.
  • To attend and participate in School meetings and development groups.
  • To participate fully in staff development and practice, including available in-service training opportunities, the delivery of in-service training to others in the area of specific responsibility, and the college appraisal system.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential: 

  • Qualified in the subject area or relevant industry experience
  • Significant, proven experience in a trade area related position.  
  • Specialist knowledge of construction equipment and machinery.
  •  Ability to use a wide range of workshop-based equipment, portable power tools and hand tools safely and confidently 
  • Be experienced at heavy lifting and working at height 
  • Experience of co-ordinating a technical team to support a performance  
  •  Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently using own initiative
  • Have strong customer focus and communication skills 
  • Good practical skills and the ability to demonstrate to others
  •  Must be committed to their own Continuous Professional Development
