ukactive is the membership organisation representing the fitness, leisure, and wider physical activity sector. It exists to provide expert support to its members on issues of reputational concern, to promote growth and champion the sector through campaigns, to provide business intelligence on sector trends, and to lobby Government to improve members’ operating landscape, ensuring the impact the sector can have on major societal issues is acknowledged and maximised.

Gyms and leisure facilities provide services which are essential to increasing and maintaining physical activity levels across all demographics, thereby improving physical and mental health, boosting social connectedness, and delivering significant economic and social value across the UK. ukactive, its members and partners can support the delivery of a healthier, happier more productive nation, and our ambition is to achieve this by working with Government to support the commitment to prevention and to integrate physical activity into all health and care pathways. This post will play a crucial role in supporting ukactive to achieve this.

General Duties:

Reporting to the Strategic Lead for Health & Wellbeing the Health and Wellbeing Project Lead will be responsible for the development and delivery of a range of health and wellbeing programmes, designed to demonstrate the integral role the fitness and leisure industry play in supporting the nation's health. They will work across the whole of the ukactive membership and with partners and agencies to secure funding and develop and deliver a range of health focussed programmes and activities. They will facilitate and drive the health agenda for ukactive and its members, raise the profile and recognition of the role of our sector on the health agenda, and work alongside members to address challenges and enhance the operating landscape for more people to be more active more often within their facilities resulting in healthier and longer lives.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

(These include, but are not limited to:)

  • Work extensively with senior colleagues, including the Director of Membership and Sector Development and the Health sub-group of board in the development and delivery of ukactives health agenda.
  • With the Head of Sector Development deliver against the agreed health ambitions within the Sport England System Partnership and develop and manage the strategic relationship with Sport England's Health Team
  • Work closely with ukactive members ensuring that there is a comprehensive understanding of their priorities, to identify good practice regarding health initiatives and to co-produce initiatives with them that improve population health and tackle inequalities
  • To develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and national agencies including the NHS, healthcare providers, and community organisations and work within these partnerships to develop and deliver programmes that have a real and lasting impact in meeting health and wellbeing priorities and objectives.
  • To identify needs and opportunities and lead on the preparation of bids to secure inward investment for projects, programmes and initiatives that facilitate the growth of the health and wellbeing agenda.
  • Lead on specific programmes of work, for example Musculoskeletal (MSK) Hubs, ensuring they succeed in the delivery of partnership agreements, project aims and objectives and assist with establishing, meeting and reporting on key metrics.
  • Provide expert project management and operational support as we work to deliver against the strategic ambitions for health
  • Work with colleagues within the directorate and across the wider organisation including research and Policy, to facilitate high quality internal relationships and actively contribute to ukactives priorities and outcomes in a way that promotes a 'oneteam’ approach
  • To keep abreast of the national health agenda and sector-wide developments with a view to continually drive improvements and widen best practice
  • Represent ukactive at a range of events and meetings with members and health agencies etc. to foster positive relationships with key partners, increase the success of programmes of work and to promote the role of ukactive and its members in supporting the health of the nation.
  • Proactively manage budget(s) in line with organisational procedures including providing appropriate budget estimates and expenditure projections and ensuring that budgets are not exceeded and that value for money is secured
  • Deputise for the Strategic Lead for Health and Wellbeing when appropriate and required
