Job Description :
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), SEN School

Donington

Up to £23,406 dependent on experience

Local SEN Specialist school is seeking an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join their team on a permanent basis.

A specialist SEMH school, which caters to a diverse cohort of 24 students aged 7 - 17, this school is a vibrant, joyful and nurturing community. The school boasts purpose-designed classrooms and therapy spaces. The strategic layout empowers their dedicated teaching and support staff to deliver tailored and impactful learning experiences. The focus is on providing bespoke opportunities for both academic advancement and personal development.

Within this role as an HLTA, no two days and no two children will be the same! The children require very special adults who can support them with their complex and challenging behaviours. You will understand that the children require lots of attention, just the right sort of communication, consistency and flexibility in equal measure, and a non-judgmental approach. You will need to be resilient, persistent and solution-focused to meet the needs of the children and to do so you need to wear a lot of hats and be prepared to change them at a moment's notice! You may be:

  • Supporting teachers in the classroom
  • Working with children 1:1 or delivering sessions with small groups of students
  • Managing classroom resources
  • Taking children on trips and visits
  • Having your lunch with children who struggle socially
  • Managing heightened behaviours and keeping children safe
  • Playing board games
  • Conducting science experiments
  • Making amazing displays
  • Celebrating success
  • Being part of therapy sessions or reflecting on difficult periods

You will be part of the decision making that drives the school, provides outcomes for children and advocates for every child. Your input in developing both the academic curriculum and the opportunities in the extra-curricular offer will be welcomed - bringing your own interests and passions to the table.

The children come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Many will also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.

The children are at the centre of decision making, ensuring that education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, the students can work together to secure outstanding outcomes for all.

To be successful in your application you will have:

Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant or in a childcare setting

Ideally experience working with SEN children

Enhanced DBS on the update service, or be willing to apply for one

In return you will be offered:

  • Staff laptop and mobile phone
  • Competitive salary
  • Extensive training and professional qualification opportunities
  • The chance to be part of an expanding, national organisation that recognises skill, effort and potential and grows its own leadership teams
  • Enhanced occupational sickness scheme
  • Flexible pension
  • Win up to £150 a month on REACH awards
  • Receive Long service financial rewards
  • Regular therapeutic and supportive supervision
  • Employee benefit service with access to wellbeing services, salary sacrifice schemes, high street vouchers, money off eating-out and takeaways
  • Cashback for various medical appointments and treatments such as dental, optical physio and more with Medicash
