Position overview:

The IT Support Engineer is a diverse role incorporating second and third line responsibilities as well as some DevOps work. The successful candidate will be responsible for resolving helpdesk tickets and helping to develop and maintain IT systems by identifying potential improvements and implementing IT infrastructure, solutions, policies and procedures. You will assist the IT Manager with the day to day management of IT infrastructure and ensure that hardware and software issues are resolved promptly, and measures put in place to minimise recurrence. You will demonstrate capability and experience in configuring, testing and monitoring desktop, software, applications and servers (Linux, Active Directory, Windows Server, Office 365, Azure/AWS) and working with both technical and non-technical users. You will have a pragmatic approach and strong communication skills, capable of clearly identifying requirements and issues and acting upon them within an appropriate time frame.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Performing a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:

  • Identify and repair hardware issues to ensure functionality.
  • Support IT systems design, installation and maintain internal communications systems.
  • Fix hardware, software and networking issues according to specification.
  • Support the development of database-driven websites.
  • Support the maintenance and administration of IT policies and processes.
  • Help to provide user training to new and existing staff.
  • Respond to general IT requests such as setting up workstations.
  • Develop and maintain the security and privacy of networks and computer systems.
  • Working with third parties.

Experience, knowledge and requirements.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent or have relevant industry experience.
  • Ability to troubleshoot network and software issues and to deliver solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies.
  • A willingness to continually learn and develop.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as individually with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with Linux environments as well as Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra/Azure AD and/or AWS administration, Microsoft Office 365, Windows 11, Slack.
  • Have a flexible approach to a changing environment with a willingness to support specialist solutions.
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Significant experience with hardware repair issues.
  • Experience working with PowerShell and Bash.
  • Be eligible to work full time in the UK without restriction.

Desirable skills

  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Experience with Ubuntu, Python scripting, LAMP stack, Nginx, PHP, Ansible
