The Opportunity:

Our client, a well-established facilities management company, is seeking a Mechanical Shift Engineer to join their team, working on a prestigious Grade II listed heritage building in London. This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled engineer with a strong mechanical background to contribute to the maintenance and preservation of a historic site. The successful candidate will work on a 4 days on / 4 days off shift pattern, days only, ensuring the smooth operation of critical mechanical systems.

The Role:

The Mechanical Shift Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimising the building's mechanical systems, including HVAC, boilers, pumps, and water systems, while ensuring the building's historical integrity is upheld. The role requires an engineer with the ability to diagnose and rectify mechanical faults quickly, while adhering to stringent health and safety standards, particularly in a heritage setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs on mechanical systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, particularly in relation to heritage buildings.
  • Swiftly diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical faults to minimise system downtime.
  • Collaborating with the facilities management team to balance modern mechanical system demands with the preservation of the building's historical features.
  • Maintaining detailed records of maintenance tasks, including PPM schedules and repair documentation.
  • Conducting routine inspections to identify potential issues or areas for improvement in mechanical systems.
  • Supporting sustainability and energy-efficiency initiatives in line with building regulations and heritage preservation standards.
  • Working alongside external contractors and ensuring all third-party work complies with both heritage and safety standards.
  • Operating within a 4 days on / 4 days off shift pattern, days only, providing consistent coverage during operational hours.

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for a highly experienced mechanical engineer with a proven track record of working within commercial or heritage buildings. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of mechanical plant systems (HVAC, boilers, pumps), excellent diagnostic skills, and an understanding of the challenges associated with maintaining listed or heritage structures.

Essential Requirements:

  • Significant mechanical engineering experience, ideally within heritage or listed buildings.
  • Expertise in maintaining HVAC, boiler, pump, and water systems.
  • A solid understanding of health and safety regulations, particularly for older buildings.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Relevant mechanical engineering qualifications (City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent).
  • Flexibility to work a 4 days on / 4 days off (days only) shift pattern.
