Job Description :
Are you an experienced Process Safety Engineer with a strong background in process safety and compliance within the chemical or related industries? Our client is looking for a dedicated and skilled Process Safety Engineer to join their engineering team. This role is critical in ensuring they maintain high process safety standards across their operations, while providing support to our Group SHE Manager on regulatory compliance matters, particularly those related to COMAH. The position can be based in North West (Liverpool/Runcorn), Teesside, or Milton Keynes, with travel required to other UK and European locations. The ideal candidate will have the technical expertise required to support the SHE team in process safety compliance, while contributing to engineering projects and ensuring safe and compliant operations across the company. What’s on offer:

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for:
  • Process Safety Support: Provide technical expertise in process safety to the Group SHE Manager and broader engineering team. Assist in maintaining compliance with COMAH and other regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Collaboration: Work closely with the Group SHE Manager to support communication and interactions with regulatory bodies such as the HSE and EA. Ensure the timely completion of actions arising from regulatory inspections and audits, as directed by the SHE team.
  • Process Safety Management: Lead process safety reviews and assessments such as HAZOP, LOPA, and functional safety assessments in collaboration with the engineering and SHE teams. Ensure that safety management systems are implemented and maintained.
  • Action Plan Implementation: Collaborate with the Group SHE Manager in developing and executing SMART action plans for addressing process safety issues identified during inspections and internal audits. Provide updates on progress and outcomes.
  • Functional Safety & Compliance: Ensure that process safety systems, including Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), comply with BS EN 61508 and other relevant standards. Work with the SHE team to address functional safety requirements across all sites.
  • Process Improvement Initiatives: Lead process safety improvement initiatives across multiple sites, ensuring safe design and operation of equipment. Work on cross-functional projects to improve safety while enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Sustainability Improvements: Support the company’s sustainability initiatives by contributing to the development and improvement of processes that reduce environmental impact, enhance energy efficiency, and facilitate the transition to bio-based operations. Work on projects aimed at supporting net-zero goals and minimizing the carbon footprint of operations across sites.
Your Background:
  • Education: Degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of post-graduate experience in process safety within the chemical or allied science based industries.
  • Process Safety Expertise: Demonstrable experience with HAZOP, LOPA, PHR, and knowledge of COMAH regulations.
  • Functional Safety: Experience with BS EN 61508 and related safety standards.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with key regulatory frameworks such as DSEAR.
  • IT Skills: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, particularly in the creation of reports, presentations, and safety documentation.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to travel and adapt to a variety of operational environments.
Preferred Skills:
  • AutoCAD Experience: Ability to create and interpret P&IDs and PFDs.
  • Industry Experience: Prior work in hazardous gas industries (e.g., chlorine) or industries with stringent safety requirements (personal care, food, etc.).
  • Project Management: Experience in overseeing process improvement projects.
