Overall Purpose of Role:

To provide an advanced level of legal advice and representation in the field of commercial law and contracts. To provide decisive and effective supervision to the team in line with the council’s ‘Vision & Values’ and ‘Leadership Qualities’ that enables them to do their best work, resulting in high levels of people and organisational performance.

Key Job Activities:

Case Management (40%)

  • Hold and manage a complex caseload of contentious and/or non-contentious legal matters.
  • Undertake complex assessments, investigations, evaluations, and analyses to resolve issues.
  • Conduct detailed legal research and interrogate intelligence and data sources.
  • Produce high-quality written documents to support legal matters.
  • Stay updated with emerging legislation, technologies, and best practices.
  • Handle complex complaints, disputes, and conflicts.

Legal Advice & Representation (40%)

  • Provide advanced legal advice to Council officers and members.
  • Represent the Council at meetings, committees, forums, and consultation events.
  • Represent the Council at court, appeals, and inquiries.
  • Fulfil statutory requirements and obligations.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with clients, partner organisations, agencies, and external bodies.
  • Provide legal advice on procurement activities and contract terms.
  • Guide staff in resolving complex legal matters.

Leading People (10%)

  • Matrix-manage approximately 5 staff within the service.
  • Provide supervision and direction to staff supporting projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with service managers to identify staff development needs and plan resources.
  • Facilitate technical upskilling and professional development.
  • Manage performance by setting objectives, monitoring outputs, and providing feedback.
  • Develop positive, trusting relationships within and outside the team.

Supporting Change Projects & Legal Performance (10%)

  • Lead or support service programmes, projects, and improvement initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain governance, stakeholder engagement, and communication arrangements.
  • Ensure robust management and regular reporting of progress, benefits, risks, issues, and dependencies.

This role is an ongoing interim role Rate:  £45ph PAYE

Hybrid working- 37 hours a week

Salary : 45 - 50
