As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

What it's like to work here

Situated just 15 miles from London, Box Hill is a famed beauty spot in the North Downs. If you like the great outdoors, you will love this stunning location with its breath-taking views, fantastic walks and colourful wildlife. Box Hill has a thriving café, and an information point in the Shepherd's Hut where National Trust memberships are sold. You’ll need your own transport to get here, however this is your chance to join a close-knit and small team in a truly idyllic location.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the area ranger, you'll be in a small team and managing lots of keen volunteers. Representing the Box Hill countryside team and working with our visitor operations and other ranger teams in the Surrey Hills to manage a high visitor site and protect our rare flora and fauna.

You'll support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards CS (Countryside Stewardship) targets. You’ll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities.

You'll be helping your team with tree safety and woodland management across Box Hill, which has very significant woodland holdings, with exciting plans to make them much more self sustainable in the future.

You'll be helping with the conservation grazing across the chalk grassland on Box Hill, lead by the Area Ranger. Building and maintaining strong professional relationships with our farming tenants, graziers, contractors, partners and neighbours to deliver more for Land and Nature.

You’ll also take responsibility for compliance, including the health and safety of your team, visitors, tree safety, and environmental management, as well as complying to standard relating to environmental practice.
