Our client is seeking a talented professional to play a pivotal external role as ‘Regional Director, Scotland’ in supporting their members, driving impactful policy engagement in Scotland, and inspiring future civil and infrastructure engineers.

Established over 200 years ago, the ICE is a professional membership body that government and industry listen to while providing support to over 97,000 members worldwide.  More than 8,000 of their members are in Scotland.

Key facts

• Full-time permanent contract
• Starting salary of £55,000 per annum, + £6,000 car allowance, and good staff benefits
• Hybrid/field based: 1 fixed day per week, in the ICE’s office in Glasgow.  This will be combined with field work (i.e., travel to various meetings with members and external stakeholders in Scotland, and occasionally further afield) and some home-working.

The role

As Regional Director Scotland, you will act as the ICE’s representative, engaging with key stakeholders including the Scottish Government, ICE members, and external partners. You will provide credible policy insights, lead and manage a team of three, and act as a persuasive and collaborative ambassador for the ICE’s goals and values.

As part of a wider team of regional directors across a global footprint you will also sometimes act as the ICE representative on wider UK/international matters.

Key responsibilities include:

Policy engagement: Represent ICE members in policy discussions, particularly on infrastructure challenges. Collaborate with members to ensure a balanced approach to policy advocacy.

Team management: Manage a team of three, comprising a regional co-ordinator, communications lead, and education and inspiration co-ordinator.

Stakeholder relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with ICE members, volunteers, staff, and external stakeholders. Be a trusted and diplomatic point of contact for government and industry representatives.

Public engagement: Represent the ICE in the media, including radio and TV appearances, to promote ICE initiatives, inspire the next generation and influence public discourse. Media training will be provided if required.

Operational oversight: Ensure smooth delivery of key objectives, manage time-sensitive projects, and adapt to the dynamic needs of the role. Collaborate across local, regional, and international levels.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of:

• Managing a hybrid multi-disciplinary team.
• Customer/client/member relations and management through key accounts and relationship management.
• Business development planning and implementation.
• Business planning, preparing budgets and financial management.
• Influencing at a high level.
• Presenting to and engaging with a wide variety of audiences.

Knowledge and skills required:

• Significant knowledge of the built environment, construction, or civil engineering sectors – a relevant professional qualification (e.g. ICE membership) is desirable.
• Knowledge of Scottish and local government and public affairs external relations.
• Strong reporting skills – the ability to provide regular, timely and concise reports, both verbal and written.
• Communication skills will be a strength combined with the ability to develop effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
• Strong skills in managing multiple and changing priorities effectively through to delivery.  Ideally this would be accompanied by project management skills with a good working knowledge of SharePoint and other MS Office applications.
