Salary Range: £50,000 - £65,000

Malloy Aeronautics Limited specializes in the development of heavy lift unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) for both civilian and military uses. Located in Berkshire, our operations are notable for their focus on in-house design and manufacturing. This vertical integration means we control the production of most aircraft components on-site, enhancing our ability to innovate and maintain high standards across all stages of development.

About The Role:

We are seeking a skilled Robotics Integration Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of cutting-edge autonomous systems. In this role, you will work at the intersection of hardware and software, integrating sensors and enhancing the autonomy of UAVs and robotic platforms. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to ensure seamless operation of autonomous systems, focusing on ArduPilot, DroneCAN, ROS, and other relevant technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in robotics and system integration to make an impact in a fast-evolving field.

Ability to hold Security Clearance - 5 years residence in the UK

What you’ll being doing (but not limited too):

  • Integrating and expanding the functionality of ArduPilot based UAS through the addition of new sensing or computing capabilities.
  • Expanding upon existing autonomous capabilities and developing new autonomous systems.
  • Developing new control methods for single and multiple platforms through homogeneous and heterogeneous simultaneous control.
  • Developing low level drivers for additional sensing or computing behaviours.
  • Application of low-level behaviour through to higher level control.
  • Implementing and troubleshooting of Drone CAN/UAVCAN, serial and IP communication protocols for sensor, actuator and controller integration.
  • Through-life testing of UAS systems and sub-systems from initial sub-system prototype to full development platforms.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure robotics functions are integrated with the whole system and validated appropriately.
  • Documenting integration processes, system configurations, test procedures and troubleshooting guidelines for internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Skills and Experiences:

  • Qualified to Degree level or equivalent in Mechatronics, Robotics, Autonomous Vehicle Control or similar discipline.
  • Extensive experience with ArduPilot and its ecosystem, including addition of new sensing hardware and computational enhancements such as companion computing.
  • Experience with the control of autonomous systems at both low and high levels.
  • Experience with integration within complex autonomous systems.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based environments, scripting, and software development tools.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • Proficiency in Drone CAN (or UAVCAN), IP networking and serial communications for integrating sensors, actuators, and other peripherals.
  • Strong knowledge of ROS (Robot Operating System) for robotic control and sensor fusion.
  • Hands-on experience with C++, Python, and embedded system development.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with systems engineering in the context of complex autonomous systems.
  • Knowledge of safety related engineering practices.
