Your new role

You will join the Scientific Operations (Sci Ops) team as a Scientific Personal Assistant (Research Administrator), playing a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the laboratories. This role involves a mix of practical and administrative responsibilities, ensuring that the scientific facilities and equipment function efficiently and safely. You will manage the supply and inventory of research consumables, provide hands-on support for laboratory maintenance, assist with equipment servicing, and help maintain a safe working environment. Main responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Ordering and maintaining key stock and consumables, including managing deliveries and updating inventory systems.
  • Providing hands-on support in the laboratories, such as organising laundry and glassware cleaning, autoclaving, changing gas cylinders, coordinating laboratory waste collections, and maintaining lab organisation.
  • Assisting with equipment maintenance and calibration, coordinating service engineer visits, and managing equipment records.
  • Supporting administrative tasks, including invoice management and coordination with the finance team.
  • Assisting the Safety Officer with health and safety duties and documentation, including risk assessments.
  • Reporting building issues to the landlord and following up as required.
  • Providing support to the Head of Scientific Operations with equipment or laboratory moves or setups.
  • Participating in occasional out-of-hours emergency call-outs on a scheduled rota basis (with time off in lieu provided).

What you'll need to succeedTo be successful in this role, you will have:

  • 5 GCSE-level qualifications (C-grade or above), including a STEM subject, or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in general administrative work.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting, either in academia or industry, is highly desirable.
  • Basic computing skills in MS Office Suite, Outlook, and relevant software.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and solving challenges.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and close attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude toward engaging with external contacts via email, phone, and in person.
  • A desire to expand responsibilities and remit.
