The SEN Teacher Job
We are currently looking for a qualified and experienced SEN Teacher to join this outstanding SEN School in Wandsworth. The school caters for students aged 2-11 Severe Learning Difficulties, Autism and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).
This SEN school is located only a short distance from the underground station and a number of bus stops, making it easily accessible by public transport. Many pupils have additional physical disabilities, communication difficulties and complex health needs. The school is rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and is heavily oversubscribed with pupils coming from across Greater London and the Home Counties as well as from within Wandsworth Borough.
The school ensures all pupils follow a curriculum that is highly personalised and differentiated to make learning fun, meaningful and engaging. The end goal is to ensure pupils are confident, independent life-learners who are able to express themselves and their choices, can problem solver and who can contribute to the community in which they live and learn.
The SEN Teacher Responsibilities
You would be leading an primary class of 8 students with the aid of at least 3 TAs. The successful SEN Teacher would need to be able to plan and deliver lessons differentiated to meet the needs of individual students. Children at this level would be working at P levels 1-8.
Due to the needs of the children, the curriculum would focus on communication, social relationships and emotional development, conceptual development and sensory responses. Student's achievement is measured regularly against 3 profiles, with emphasis on individual progress and not specific grades.
The Ideal SEN Teacher Applicant
As an SEN Teacher, you would be using a range of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems including Makaton Signing, On Body Signing, Coactive Signing, PODD Communication Books, PECS and a number of hi-tech voice output technologies (GoTalks, iPads, Proxtalker). Experience in working with these communication aids would be advantageous however the school provides an intensive induction programme to all new staff.
You must have excellent communication and team work skills as you would be required to work with support staff, therapists, parents and carers. To be eligible for this position, you must have QTS and experience in teaching children with similar needs.
