Description
As the Senior Accountant - Capital & Technical, your responsibilities will include:
- Managing the fixed asset register, including oversight of capital accounting transactions, grants, depreciation, and statutory returns.
- Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the Council's balance sheet, with a focus on asset-related items.
- Responding to audit queries and providing clear, technical explanations to external auditors.
- Maintaining the capital ledger, ensuring transactions are posted accurately, and processing necessary adjustments.
- Preparing and submitting statutory returns, ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
- Developing and implementing policies to interpret and align with legislative and accounting standards.
- Supporting the governance framework for allocating funds by evaluating investment proposals and analysing their financial strengths and weaknesses.
- Supporting the delivery of the Council's statement of accounts by managing capital elements of the balance sheet.
- Building strong relationships with non-financial stakeholders, translating complex financial data into actionable insights.
Profile
The Successful Applicant Should Have:
- Qualifications: Must be CCAB qualified (e.g. CIPFA, ICAEW, ACCA) or CIMA.
- Capital accounting expertise or a strong background in technical accounting.
- Demonstrable balance sheet knowledge, with experience managing fixed asset registers and statutory reporting.
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and apply legislative and accounting standards.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with non-financial audiences.
- A proactive, hardworking attitude, with a willingness to learn and build relationships across teams.
- Experience in local government finance or the public sector is desirable but not essential.
