Purpose of the RoleThe Senior Aerothermal Engineer will play a vital role in developing Heat Management and HVAC Systems for high-performance road vehicles. This hybrid role requires 2-3 days per week on-site in Woking, combining 1D simulation, CFD, and vehicle testing to meet design specifications and ensure optimal system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Heat Management and HVAC Systems development from functional specification to programme sign-off, ensuring attribute, timing, and investment targets are met.
- Utilise 1D simulation, CFD, and vehicle testing to design and optimise HVAC and heat management systems, achieving targets for glass defrost, passenger comfort, and engine bay temperature management.
- Define and develop HVAC software control strategies, performing calibration and certification through rig and vehicle testing.
- Communicate design progress and critical issues to programme management and lead reviews with Attribute, Styling, and Design teams to ensure targets are met.
- Define and deliver the attribute Design Verification Plan (DVP) in collaboration with Vehicle Development and the Vehicle Validation Coordinator.
- Continuously improve Aerothermal testing methodologies to reduce development times, enhance test data accuracy, and improve tool correlation, supporting cross-functional integration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Ideally a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related scientific discipline.
- Strong understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanics fundamentals.
- Proven analytical abilities with 1D systems modelling tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or AMESim.
- Expert knowledge of CFD techniques, particularly for modelling conjugate heat transfer and buoyancy-driven flows (STAR-CCM+ preferred).
- Experience with climatic and mule vehicle testing, including measurement and calibration methods (CANape experience advantageous).
- Familiarity with freeform surfacing tools such as CATIA V5 is beneficial but not essential.
Personal Attributes
- A rigorous, quantitative approach and an inquisitive mindset to validate design solutions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
