Job description

The Department for Transport has a wide and varied agenda ranging from delivering large road and rail infrastructure projects through to improving bus services, working with the aviation and maritime sectors and reducing environmental impacts and decarbonising transport.

As Senior Finance Business Partner, you will be responsible for providing professional financial leadership and advice to Directors General and Directors, leading in the areas of financial planning, financial management and improved decision-making. You will also be responsible for improving the accuracy of forecasting, and to develop and implement action plans to achieve this.

Within this challenging and varied role, you will engage with a range of senior stakeholders and will build positive working relationships. This will include coordinating the completion of monthly Group performance reports and assisting in the presentation of reports in Group Board meetings and Directorate team meetings. You will encounter occasions where you will need to appropriately challenge and influence colleagues, as well as keep pace with technical accounting issues and the changing priorities of delivery partners.

Person specification

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading on the analysis and monitoring of the DG Group performance against business plans
  • Supporting DGs and Directors in the development of business plans
  • Leading on the development of longer-term financial and workforce plans, including input and challenge to Spending Review returns
  • Providing sound financial management to the DG Group's expenditure within agreed budget
  • Input and scrutiny to submissions proposed by policy teams and evaluation of business cases supporting investment decisions

About you

You will be a fully qualified financial professional who is qualified under one of the main five Consultative Committees of Accounting Bodies (CCAB) i.e. ACCA; CIPFA; ICAEW; ICAS; CIMA and have experience and knowledge of the finance sector.

You will be a confident, articulate communicator and a trusted adviser, with the ability to provide sound financial advice to help DG Group's manage their finances soundly.

You will have outstanding interpersonal skills and experience of building effective and influential relationships with senior stakeholders, and a track record of demonstrating excellent financial management and providing added-value advice. Additionally, you will have built and led high-performing teams.

Additional Information:

A minimum60%of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

There may be occasions where you will be required to travel to other DfT offices and attend meetings and visits around the UK.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement, for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.
