Job Title: Special Needs Assistant
Location: Oxfordshire
Pay Rate: £14 - £15 per hour
Hours: Full-Time/Part-Time (depending on availability)
Job Description:
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and proactive Special Needs Assistant to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other related special educational needs within a school setting in Oxfordshire. You will be working closely with teaching staff, SENCo, and other professionals to provide tailored support that enhances learning, development, and emotional well-being for students with ASD.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 or small group support to children with ASD/Autism, helping them access the curriculum and achieve their learning goals.
- Use a variety of teaching techniques, including positive body language, good communication, and structured routines to support children's learning and development.
- Assist with the social, emotional, and behavioural development of children, ensuring a safe and comfortable learning environment.
- Support students during transitions between activities and throughout the school day, ensuring consistency and stability.
- Maintain regular communication with teachers, parents, and the wider team to monitor progress and adapt support strategies as needed.
- Provide assistance with personal care, where required.
- Assist in managing challenging behaviour using de-escalation techniques, always promoting a positive and supportive environment.
- Attend all staff meetings
Key Skills & Experience:
- Previous experience working with children with ASD/Autism or other related special educational needs, preferably within a school or educational setting.
- Knowledge of effective strategies and interventions for supporting children with ASD, including sensory needs and communication difficulties.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Patience, empathy, and a calm demeanour when working with challenging behaviours.
- Ability to work as part of a team but also independently with initiative.
- Basic understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols.
- Relevant qualifications in Special Educational Needs (SEN) are desirable but not essential.
Qualifications:
- Minimum GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent).
- Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or willingness to work towards).
- Training in Autism or SEN is highly desireable but not mandatory.
