Job Overview:
A forward-thinking school in Islington is looking for an experienced Teaching Assistant with specialised training in Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This full-time role is ideal for someone passionate about working with children who have communication difficulties and is experienced in SEN environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and group support to students with communication needs, utilising PECS as a communication tool.
- Assist students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), speech and language difficulties, and other complex needs.
- Implement and follow individualised education plans (IEPs) in coordination with the classroom teacher and SENCO.
- Support students in accessing the curriculum by using a variety of communication aids and techniques.
- Monitor student progress, documenting key milestones and reporting back to teachers and SEN specialists.
- Prepare and manage PECS resources and assist with the development of communication strategies for students.
- Assist in behaviour management and support the emotional and social well-being of students.
- Work collaboratively with other staff members, therapists, and parents to ensure students receive comprehensive support.
- Participate in training and development programs to enhance SEN knowledge and skills.
Ideal Candidate:
- Experience: Previous experience working with children with SEN is essential, with a focus on students with communication challenges, particularly those using PECS.
- Training: Formal training in PECS is required. Additional SEN training (e.g., ASD, Makaton, speech and language therapy) is highly desirable.
- Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students and staff.
- Patience and Empathy: Ability to work calmly and patiently with children who have complex needs.
- Team Player: A collaborative approach to working within a team and willingness to contribute to a supportive school environment.
- Flexibility: Willing to adapt to the unique challenges and rewards of working in an SEN setting.
