Job Description :

We are currently seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Trading Standards Officer to join a dynamic team committed to upholding consumer protection and fair trading standards. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact in the community while working collaboratively with various stakeholders.

About You:

  • You possess a strong understanding of Trading Standards legislation and enforcement, particularly in Food Standards, Feed Hygiene, and Product Safety.
  • You demonstrate excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage your workload effectively and independently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and work under pressure.
  • While a relevant professional qualification is advantageous, your practical experience in a related field will be highly valued.
  • Flexibility is key, as you will occasionally be required to work during evenings and weekends.
  • Previous experience in a local authority environment, particularly within a statutory or regulatory role, is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports on breaches of Trading Standards legislation, ensuring compliance with the Council’s Enforcement Policy.
  • Plan and carry out inspections of trade premises and businesses, prioritising high-risk areas based on intelligence-led assessments.
  • Provide professional advice and support to businesses to promote compliance and facilitate regeneration initiatives.
  • Address consumer complaints, informing them of their rights and responsibilities under civil and criminal law.
  • Collaborate with local, national, and international partners to enhance the delivery of Trading Standards services.
  • Mentor and support colleagues, including students, to develop their skills and effectiveness within the team.
  • Undertake responsibilities as a Weights and Measures Inspector, fulfilling statutory obligations.
  • Lead in specific areas of expertise, managing relevant budgets and producing action plans.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional approach when engaging with consumers, businesses, and colleagues.
  • Ensure compliance with Approved Body Status requirements for weighing and measuring equipment as designated by the National Measurement Office.
  • Actively promote equality and inclusion in line with the Council’s Equal Opportunities policy.
  • Support Health and Safety initiatives to uphold high standards of safe working practices.
